I have done what so many of you have done and put an oil catch can between the hose from the engine block through to the air inlet before the turbo. My question is;
Is there a problem having the hose not contected up to the air inlet from the catch can? My thoughts were that I would possibly get a slightly better performance out of the 3.0L T/D (nothing spectacular) if the hot air from the engine block did not go back into the air supply as colder air holds more oxygen and you would get a better burn rate??

After talking to my dad though he said that back in the 60's when they started making engines with the air line from the engine block going back into the air inlet was to help create proper crank pressure in the motor for some vehicles and that it could be hooked up for this reason in the d22. Or something along those lines??

Can anyone here verify that if the hose was not contected to the air inlet it could pose a problem on the motors crank pressure?

Cheers

That's a PCV (positive crankcase ventilation) line. It's there to ventilate the crankcase, ie. prevent a build up of pressure, not provide pressure. The motor won't have any trouble without it connected AFAIK as long as there is somewhere to vent to and you don't blank off the PCV. As for your underbonnet cleanliness, you might find some of the oily residue isn't caught by the filters in your catch can and would wind up settling somewhere under the bonnet.

The P.C.V venting gassses, is such a small volume that it would have no effect on the inlet air temp.
It iis illegal to disconnect the hose as it prevents noxious gasses entering the atnosphere.
