Last couple of months I have had trouble with cruise control. I push the button on the steering wheel and cruise control displays but the set light just flashes. On occasions I can't get the cruise light to come on at all. Yesterday I got the cruise on eventually (with set light flashing) and could not turn off. You might think it is the on/off switch but I ain't too sure if this is the problem. I have switched engine off, waited and tried again with some success in past but this no longer worked yesterday. Having said this i drove to Newcastle last week and it worked fine, switched on/off, set properly and all good. Any suggestions or similar problems?

Can't say I've read any problems exactly like yours, there was a thread or two recently about Cruise controls having a mind of their own, maybe you could search for those and see if there is anything of value for you in them. I haven't looked in the manual (and don't have time right now to do so) but chances are it's one of those things I'd just take to an auto elec and say fix because of the time and fiddling around issue.

And Welcome to the forums.

Hey there hatch I had a similar sort of problem and you would never guess the good people at Nissan fixed the problem no worries ( "Nissan no worries" . . . I know I know but there is a first and more than likely last time for anything) I think they said there was a problem between toggle switch and electrics in steering wheel they replaced the toggle and had it back to me in minutes ( another first and last) good luck buddy and happy naving!

I will talk to the good folk at Nissan today. Tried cruise today and it worked fine!!! Intermittent problem I guess. I will suggest they look between toggle switch and electrics as starting point so thanks for that. Gotta have cruise or the cars gone... maybe I am getting too soft from the falcon XF days.

Advised that switch assembly needs replacing. Parts ordered. Driving today and discovered that I could switch on cruise turning steering wheel to right and couldn't when turning left. Set light still flashing and unable to set but I could turn on. I'm not so sure that the switch assembly is the issue and possibly the wiring? Anybody clued up on cruise to let me know what is between these switches and the cruise control box? Bit hesitant to fork out $400 bucks for switch assembly when it might be just the wiring.

Be careful popping the covers off to check. The airbag can easily be deployed and Nissan won't be doing you a favour with the cost of replacing it. That, plus since your face would be really close when it lets go, it'd not only hurt like hell, it'll probably break your nose.

I've done some researching since last and found wiring diagram online. There is a "Combination Switch (Spiral Cable)" between the ASCD Steering Switch and the ECM. Maybe this is the issue?

Old Tony... I don't plan to pull apart myself but just voice my concern to service centre that switch assembly may not be issue and check between. I'm not too sure what they checked to determine switch faulty other then nothing switched on. Being 2006 it no longer warranty and out of my back pocket.

I see that resistance values are the key to determine what is being activated. A faulty combination switch could not only cause the cruise to not turn on unless steering wheel in right position but stuff up resistance values back to ECM causing it not to set but just flash. Wondering if this combination switch is part and parcel to the switch assembly or entirely new part?

If you have a look on ebay there is a set of plastic wheel inserts for Pathy's which have both the cruise and stereo controls on them and as a complete part both left and right sides of the wheel come with the switches and the wiring loom of about 100mm which would indicate to me that the entire part for the switches comes with enough cabling to plug into the terminal block already there and anything beyond that terminal block is an extra part.

I'll have a look at the parts cattledog later on and see if I can trace out just how many parts are included from the controller down to the ECM if you like.

According to the cattledog the plastic panel and switch (switches if there is stereo controls as well) are one part with the wire coming off them which joins into the wiring loom, from there on there is no further part listed to the ECM which would indicate to me it feeds direct to the ECM through the loom without additional parts.

Interestingly though according to the parts list from the 07 onwards stereo controls which the they didn't have factory fitted until the 2010 model I believe are the only part number shown, there is no part number shown for cruise on the right and a blank panel on the left.

Thanks KraftyPg. I could stuff around trying to find fault in the wiring loom or just bite the bullet and get a new switch assembly with wiring loom. I'll ask for the old parts so as I can inspect.

Here is a link to the pdf (1 page) of this combination switch listed in August 2005 Elect Service Manual:

Powered by Google Docs

I'm guessing this is the wiring loom itself.

Finally got around to replacing cruise control switch assembly on steering wheel from dealer but still no go. Connected computer and all the sensors working correctly I was told. They advised that I need a new combination clock spring. So before I fork out $400 + labour to fit I thought I would run it past here first. Been a few months since post so maybe someone else has had same issue.

I only have two manual d40s so don't take it as a given .the thai is diferent to the spanish (the troubled one)as the sensor on the clutch was the issue but bugger me dead, after fussing for 12 months found the grommet on the pedal had deteriorated on one side and wasn't activating the sensor on the pedal.worth a look maybe?the thai has a direct actuator so no dramas there

To end this thread with a solution, it was the combination clock spring causing issue. Replaced and all good now. Now I have a power steering oil leak??? But that is for a new thread.
