A intercooler is a very worthwhile mod.

On a hot day as in 40 degrees, tell us how your Nav drives.

My use to lose power from the thinner air.

Now with the intercooler, power is the same.

My pyro will only go over 420 degrees when I am up near 4000rpm in 4th.

Thats when the turbo is out of its efficiency range.

However, my new turbo will overcome that.

I must have been lucky when my turbo shaft snapped...I turned it around and idled home(about a 1 km)changed the turbo over and had no motor issues what so ever...

Umm a slight pinging noise developed and i had several mechanics look over it, including Nissan themselves who, after a nice $625 bill came back and said, we dont know what the noise is, but shes ok to drive. MMM righto nissan. then a week later i took it to a 4x4 specialist who changed the oil from a 15w-40 to a 5w-40, and they put an engine flush shit through it thinking it could be a sticky lifter. no less than 24 hours later, with around 300km since they did that, BANG it was pinging so loud sounded like a fucking aeroplane was taking off, and shaking extremely violently. whoops :/

Was talking to Andrew (BlackNav) and Will the other day about the intercooler.

So comparison time.

Since there Nav's are stock, Ill give them a drive of my Nav as I am use to it and see what they say.

The whole lot sounds a bit weird.

Was the cause pinging noise determined in the end? Possible causes Injector leak, valve touching piston, lifters, incorrect timing etc...

Ive not seen any turbo fail without some sort of reason, be it oil starvation or quality.
Or, foreign objects being drawn in, destroying the comp wheel.

Or something from the engine, such as a piece of piston or valve destroying the turbine > Leading to bearing and comp wheel failure also.

Got any pics of the dead engine? Especially macro closeups of the pistons and combustion chambers.

(Please bare with me as I'm still learning...not a mechanic here)

Mine started doing that last night. Yesterday afternoon on my way home from work a screeching noise started, thought it was a leaking hose or something to do with the turbo...checked them all, tightened the clamps and they were fine. Got a mate to go through and check everything out and it seemed fine, had him baffled.

Then just as an added extra cause my oil was a bit low we put some 15w-40 oil in to top it up and a weird pinging noise developed and we can't figure out what it is! Sounds like a mandolin rather than metal though :-\

Can anyone help figure out what it is? I can't afford for my engine to blow up...

And Dave, how did the comparison go? Oh, and I know I have seen it here somewhere... but for the life of me can't find it... what turbo have you replaced yours with?
Cheers...

Hey guys sorry for the late reply haha forgot about this post! She actually did a big end bearing.. The turbo joint f****d me around trying to say it was the turbo and it was not until recently when we actually stripped old motor that we found the big end bearing shat its self. Sorry guys

Hey Fellas, I have an 04 ZD30 D22 Navara and have to say I love it. It has now done 222,000 Kms and going well. I did However blow a turbo not too long ago that came without warning, luckily no damage was done to the engine.

as I always do, especialy living in Darwin I always conduct oil changes every 5,000 kms and keep my air filter clean.
This is something that I will continue to do no matter where in Australia I am living.

I think that servicing every 10,000 kms is too far in between for any diesel.

It can add power and increase fuel effeciency. by how much depends on whether it is a top mount of front mount and how big it is. As far as I know, bigger is always better and front mount will do more cooling as more air can get too it. And unless there is a hoodscoop, front will trump top.

does the intercooler add any power?
I never had mine on a dyno, before or after fitting the top mount i/c from cross country. But it feels like its got more go in it, not huge but its there, Turbo seems to be spooled up quicker more responsive

I,m finding it hard to get accurate fuel readings at the moment because i,m going up hills a little quicker, But its definitely no worse

I changed the turbo out before it went bang, cost $4000, yes a lot but still cheaper than an engine rebuild, had the install done by Mike Vines, along with the Taipan water to air intercooler, Mike had really good things to say about this intercooler, also Taipan 3inch exhaust & a Tunit chip,
I have a dyno sheet under my garage, 864Nm at the rear wheels, this is running 255/85R16 or 33.4inch tyres, Mike also said he could get another 20% more if I changed back to the standard wheel size. Bugger me from a standing start I can squeal these BFG Km2, Check out Mike Vines web site heaps of info and dyno sheets.

Hey guys, just joined. I have an 04 ZD30, interesting about the thin air giving loss of power, I had noticed that, thought I was going crazy.
I was just coming back from a drive along a highway, I shifted back to 4th on a big hill, when I got over the hill and back into 5th I could hear the turbo over my music. Normally I can hear it whistle but only when I have no music on. It has gotten extremely loud all of the sudden, whistle wise and just sounds like it is pumping mass air. I haven't noticed anything power wise or how it is running (only happened 20k down the road)
What are my possible causes? I have read through this thread but not being mechanically minded doesn't help my cause.
Forgot to say it is all standard and has just rolled over 200k.
Cheers in advance
Ben

Air only gets thin when you go up in altitude, its just when its warm the air is more dense and not as easily compressed, as a result more air can fit in the intake stroke when its cooler outside.

Just had a full 3 inch exhaust system from the turbo back fitted to my 2003 (with a 2006 motor) D22 3.0L and holy shit feels like a new car, definitely a worthwhile mod. Picks up virtually off idle and no turbo lag whatsoever. Sounds so good too, you can hear the turbo spooling so much better haha! :)

Turbo whistle is normally a split hose or loose clamp between the turbo and intake manifold.
Could also be an exhaust leak, with those sort of kms the EGR pipe that runs from the end of the exhaust manifold around the back of the engine has been known to crack.
