I did actually find the ultra extra at Repco but not every spec that Nissan request was listed on the bottle. I don't know if they have changed the label since you've seen it or not but I read every bit of text on the labels of every 5W-30 bottle just so that I could make sure there wasn't something missing and the Nulon was the only one that had everything letter for letter.

I'm not suggesting your choice or my choice is the only one that is right because unlike Caltex I'm sure oils is oils and if one makes a suitable oil then chances are everyone else does too. I just found it weird that none of the leading brands (for want of a better word) listed letter for letter the specs required yet all claimed they were "Nissan reccomended" and the Nulon listed every spec letter for letter and was over $25 cheaper for the same 5 litre bottle.

As for buying by the drum I'd be happy to if I had storage but my garage is full and my mechanic isn't a general mechanic and needs his storage space to store oil in 500 litre drums. My little Nav isn't his bread and butter its a lunch time job.

Those are the oils recomended by the technical depts at castrol and shell after i gave them the nissan oil specs.
They are in fact higher quality than factory recommend and you cant get better than full syn oil.
The shell Ultra Extra is purpose made to suit DPF fitted engines,
where i having the D22 use the Ultra 5W-40.
Castrol and Mobil have Equally high perf oils that suit.

On the other hand if it wasnt for that dreaded DPF,
Castrol 15W- 40 SuperRX would be plenty good.

I can use the above oil or similar mineral oils in my 2.5TD D22 but i chose to use the expensive ful syn oils for the reason that my toy is/was brand new and i have great faith in synthetic oil technology with its years of testing in the race engine enviroments since the 80's and nothing compares to its performance.

After all these are the oil manufacturers that supply oil to car makers/dealers.

Entirely your choice though.

PS....just to convey the pricing between 5ltr and 20 ltr drums in the syn grades,
5ltr...60 - 75 dollars and 20ltr around the 200 mark

Yep thats right,
if ur doing your own servicing it will save you to buy the 20l drums and even more so the 205l drum.

The only thing thats annoying is the advent of greater than 5l sumps:angry:

I am running Penrite HPR Diesel 15 in both my D22 and R51 Pathfinder (YD25, auto and an early one so no DPF in the exhaust) I use HPR10 in the winter only. Both get changed at 5000KM intervals.

A 20l drum isnt that big, but i do understand you when you say you dont have space, im in the same position with lack of space.

Compared to the oil my mate goes through and the sheds they work in you're right 20 litres does take up bugger all space but the problem is my nav is the only car they ever service the rest of their work is big stuff. It's like me storing an iMac in my office of ibms (which are the main sellers) for a customer who only visits once a year. Just doesn't make sense.

My mechanic specialises in turbo jap sports cars but orders in diesel oil for me when i book in a service. But i dont know if he gets a lot or just what i need.

My mechanic specialises in large diesel engines and generally uses Mobil, although now that the local supplier has changed to Caltex he gets Caltex but because he doesn't ever need oil suitable for DPF engines it's pointless him ordering me a drum of it and storing it.

One of the things we suffer from down here is a lack of choice. SuperCrap is the only shop here that has a specific diesel engine section and they have about 10 or 15 varieties of oil in that section and of those varieties maybe 4 of them are available in 20 litre and only one 5 litre variety had the exact specs Nissan want. Sure if I want car bling or stereos that go thump Autobahn and SuperCrap here can help me but if I want something like oil I'm really at the mercy of their ordering department, which is probably some 16 yr old who only uses oil when he brushes his hair.

If I was in the city where there is a lot more choice the options would no doubt increase but it's just not worth a trip to the city for oil once or twice a year when there is one product that meets the exact needs Nissan says, is Nissan authorised (according to the bottle) and is nearly $25 cheaper than any alternative that only stated some of the specs.

Just had my first dealer service done. 5K + 10K combined with 7K actually on the clock.

Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W-30 was used.

So much for "genuine Nissan oil"

So now I know exactly what to use for the 15K service

Until such time as Nissan actually own a refinery the chances of anyone getting "genuine Nissan" oil is pretty slim.

The word genuine just refers to oil used at a Nissan dealership, which is what ever brand they get the best deal on. Anyone who is naive enough to believe Nissan have their own genuine oil is the exact person they are trying to convince that all servicing has to be done at the dealership for a grossly marked up prices.

The biggest joke is the cost they charge you per litre for the Shell/Mobil/Caltex, (whatever they call genuine at the time), compared to buying it at somewhere like SuperCrap. Then they also have the nerve to charge you a stupid amount for disposal of the old oil, but thats a different story.

Dealer charged me $16.60 per L

Supercheap Auto:wink: have it for $15.00 per L

The Dealer also charged $12.50 for disposal

It is the labour rate of $175/hr that is the real rip off:dontknow:

At $16.60 per litre its a rip off but you still didn't do too bad, I've seen the local bloke here charge over $20 a liter for the oil they use,

$175 per hour, that's $20 per hour for the apprentice to change the oil, $35 per hour for the qualified tech to drink his coffee and $120 per hour for parking in their garage, you did pretty well.

Maybe nissan dont use their genuine oil in the workshop,
but they sell a nissan packeged gen motor oil in their spare parts shop, and have it on their website last time i looked.

My local dealer used the genuine bottle stuff in my Nav for about 20,000km's and then started using Valvoline.

Dave.

Yeah, ya cant win...

rmemba back when the misses had a service done on her old EF wagon at the dealer and on the itemised invoice it had $35 for 5 ltr of Castrol GT-X2,
when the same oil at Kmart sold for $12.50.

Please explain.

Surprised really ?

I mean really $400 for a ZD30 injector from Nissan, Zexel sell them for $200. Zexel make the Nissan ones.

Dave.

D22 str zd30 engine.I use genuine fully sinthetic oil with genuine filters every 5000 kms, been good so far, got 125000 on the clock.

Just changed from Penrite Hpr15 to Hpr5 ad the oil light has been taking alittle longer to go off on cold mornings.

Pentrite have also adjusted there viscosity ratings (or advertised the fact)

HPR5 is now 5w40

and HPR15 os 15w60

...hence the reason I changed. The 5w40 is much thinner and pours a hell of a lot quicker. (holding a 10l 15w60 drum up in the air for a good 5mins took some stamina.)

Any comments? Will let you knoe how it goes.

Anyone up on the new Global DLD2/3 specs? Do these replace ACEA, Jaso DH1 etc?
