Hi guys,
Iv just installed an autometer boost gauge. I went to autobarn to buy a tpeice with a thread to suit the fitting by autometer at the end of the line, but the guy convinced me not to tap in the boost gauge to the vac line because if anything happens to the line tgat runns into the gauge the turbo could overboost. He suggested i tap a thread into the inlet of the intercooler. What have you guys done?

Ive done my boost gauge into the intercooler cold side. Its in my build threac somewhere. Took it to a fab guy and he did it for i think $20. Took him 30mins.

Rusty

Take off the front grille, on the left hand side there is a sensor that goes into the intercooler. Take the sensor off, and put a tee piece there. No tapping involved, just need some small vac hose.

Maybe on the d40, but he has a d22 which has a top mount intercooler. There are no boost sensors anywhere on the intake system to tap into, it's either drill and tap the intercooler or the intake manifold or I teed mine off the wastegate hose on the turbo itself. Been fine for close to 2 years like that now... I did put a zip tie on the hose that goes to the gauge just in case which has probably helped...

Can see it in this photo

Mine is teed into boost line near turbo
Works fine
Reading boost from i/cooler like rusty is better but the other way is ok also

You can get a tap from any bolt supplier like in sydney we have Bolt Master. Best way is to get your fitting from like Pirtek or some place like that you can get a press in fitting similar to this

Or if you go to Auto One, Auto Barn or Super Cheap you can get the brass olive type that I used. Just take some hose with you. The fittings normally come with the gauge. That's what I am using the standard auto meter one. Someone like Pirtek should be able to sort you out with fittings and hose then yeah just take the fitting to a bolt supplier and buy the drill and tap. If you were in Sydney I would say come over one weekend and I will drill it for you, but bit of a drive for ya.

Good luck it's no hard to do once you get the parts to do it. Cheers

i have my boost T and boost gauge tapped into the waste gate line...... have it set up to show no vac and only boost...... works great and is very accurate

a diesel motor should not read vac

Install the boost nipple as close to the cold side of engine as possible...there may be minor pressure difference from hot to cold side, so if you want the most accurate reading of what your engine is getting put it on the cold side.
