Hello All,

I broke down travelling between Mackay, QLD and Singleton, NSW. I managed to get my Navara D40 YD25 2008 towed to Nissan Dalby. They have since looked at the car and informed that the cylinder head is warped. They will be getting back to me with a quote for the repairs by Tuesday.

I was wondering if anyone has anyone else had to repair/replace a cylinder head and would be able to advise me what the costs were to do this. Also do I have any options in regards to replacing/repairing the cylinder head, i.e. is there an aftermarket head? Any other advise on what to look out for in this quote so I don't get taken advantage of would also be appreciated.

Thanks

Warpped Head

Hi I had the same problem back in March. still working on it. Had the head machined, alot of hasell. Replacement head from Vic about $2G. smae again for labour. If you have the $ I would get it replaced. If You have done 100,000km I would have the timing chains done too. Want warpped the head?

Thanks for the info David. My Navara has done 105,000kms so I will speak to Nissan about the timing chains.

I have asked Nissan to provide details of what may have caused the head to warp, but they couldn't. Hopefully they can shed some more details on this next week.

I have had the local mechanic pressure test the radiator and that was all good so I know it wasn't a leak in the radiator that caused it.

Nissan got back to me today with an approximate cost of $5000 for a new head!!!:pissedoff:

Is this right?

Replacement head from Vic about $2G

David where did you source this price from mate?

worse thing is you dont know what caused the head to warp and if you replace with another it may happen again.

Just went to my local nissan dealer to check the price. $4499.90 for the cylinder head if Spanish built which is the case for my car and $1267.70 for the cylinder head if Thai built. I would really be interested to find out how Nissan can justify this pricing.

When did the 140kw engine come out.

The rest of the YD25 heads are the same, well that was my understanding.

PM Nizzbits.

the 05 to early 07 d40s were different but that was just re arangment of the turbo and different fuel filters. In 2010 the d40 navara came out with more kw (140) and with a new parrallel port cylinder head aswell.

A mate has a 2007 STX, the radiator hose burst under warranty. Nissan repaired the head and lent him a car while doing the repairs. About 18 months later the head started leaking again. Luckily he had extended the warranty due to original hose burst. Nissan lent him a car again. Remember it took a while to get a new head imported. Nissan didnt have any in Australia.
Had another mate with a Hilux which did a head out of warranty. Toyota gave him the price for both a new genuine and reconditioned head. There was a big difference in price.

engine action at echuca can get the right after market head, set up with your valves cams gaskets for less than half the genuine bare head price

Thanks Montana, I will give engine action a call tomorrow to see if they can help me out.

Dave, I ended up PM Nizzbits. Thanks for the tip. Here is what he had to say...

I don't have any tech specs so can't tell you the actual difference but the heads are definately completely different part numbers. I looked into it a bit and noticed the valves are different, timing chains are different, and cams are different so I am assuming there may be a difference internally in the head to suit the valves, cams etc. the head gaskets are the same so I am guessing (only a guess) that if you got a complete cylinder head off a Thai one it may do the job but if you are going down that track you may as well get a second hand Spanish head as probably not a lot of difference in second hand prices.

I also gave Evan at www.headex.com.au a call today. They have provided a number of these heads prior and not once has one been returned due to it not fitting a Spanish built Navara. They supply a new Thai built head assembled with re-co parts for $1800. Much better than $4.5k.

Now if the valves, cams and cylinder head are different on the Spanish built Navara but the head gasket is the same, would using a fully assembled head for a Thai built Navara work on my Spanish Built Navara?
