Ok guys, I thought i'd post up the itinerary for Friday and Saturday about now, just so you can all have a think about what you would like to do this weekend.... Friday night is camping at the Carter's Road camping area. Now, due to the incredible snow forecast I am going to leave the Saturday itinerary fairly open.

Myself and my navigator are both very keen snowboarders and if this snow forecast holds true, then this may well be the best start to an Australian snow season since 2000. With the tracks still open we should be able to get our vehicles up to the junction of Clear Hills Track and Monument Track, after which, the gate to the summit of Mt Stirling will be closed. On Sat I will be (if the snow cover is good), checking out Craig's Hut in the morning (via the easier, Clear Hills Track off Circuit Road) and then proceeding from here up to this track junction where i'll walk the rest of the way to the summit of Stirling for a few hours of backcountry snowboarding. For those that don't snowboard or ski, I highly recommend you hire some snowshoes (or a toboggan) in Mansfield and go for a hike along the summit of Stirling, it's very rare to be able to get vehicles so close to the summit with good snow cover and it will be an incredible sight to see!

For those of you who are more interested in pure 4wding: The Monument Track to Craig's Hut will be very tough, if not impassable with a solid cover of snow, so you may wish to tackle this. After lunch the plan is head back down to Circuit Road and onto Black Landing Road down to Pineapple Flat. Now, depending on how much time we spend on the summit of Stirling, we can camp here for the night, or push on for another hour or two to Lake Cobbler.

Can I please get an idea of how many of you would be interested in the hike up to Stirling and how many would rather tackle the Monument then push on to Pineapple Flat/Lake Cobbler?

i'd prefer to head to pineapple flat/lake cobbler - hopeing for a little less snow and easier to have a camp fire ...

brrrrrrrr

Yeah that's the plan regardless, what I want to know is who is interested in spending a few hours on top of Stirling before heading to the campsite and who wants to just see Craig's Hut and push on to the campsite right away....

ohhh .... ummm ....

i will have my 5 year old with me ... i guess i better stick around at the top of Stirling so he can play in the snow and get really really cold.

is that the type of response your seeking ?

Woody: yep that's the info i'm after. If you don't want to hang around on the summit then you don't have to though, you are more than welcome to head straight to the campsite with all those in favour of that.

Heata: Yep, definitely weather dependent!

we can laugh now ... but how many of would really be wishing we;d bought the electric warmed clothes once we get into the high country .... brrrrrr
