V9X Oil Leak

Hi all, Newbie here I have an oil leak that is flowing predominantly LHS of gearbox but does flow each side sometimes. I have replaced the catch can hoses, washed it down and rechecked with every - b....y type of light known to man, but don’t really want to remove the engine. I’m guessing to must be a turbo oil line or similar but we just can’t identify exactly The origin of the oil. Has anyone got suggestions before I pull the B....y engine out.

Is it engine oil? Assuming it is, it's most likely coming from the turbo but may also come from the PCV (cracked outlet?) or a cam cover gasket (rare, but still possible).


There is an oil feed into the turbo, and a large return pipe which relies on gravity and a clear path to get the oil out. The hose that connects this to the engine may have cracked or come loose. Because the turbocharger sits at the back of the engine, seeing the leak may not be easy. I use an inspection camera for tricky stuff, which works rather well, but also find a dentist's mirror handy (I have one on a telescopic rod, very handy).


Check the PCV outlet on the top of the camshaft cover. It's plastic and can break. If it's leaking oil out, it could be leaking unfiltered air in.

Challenge begins

Thanks for your input have camera, they aren’t much good to find oil leaks, mirrors etc: So I’m removing the engine ( wow what a challenge, reminds me of working on Rolls Royce - 2 Weeks to get a gearbox out) I now know why I changed careers. I’ll let you know what I find - access is the big issue and it’s bound to be something small. I’m glad I’m not paying a tradie to do the job, be better to buy another vehicle

Hey, guys, I'm a new member, created an account because others need to know about this problem with the v9x Nissan Navara's stx550 d40.

First a little introduction about me, we are a Nissan patrol and Nissan Navara specialist on the gold coast, called gold coast patrols and mechanical.

Ok now about this oil leak problem on the v9x.

we fitted a used engine from the wreckers about 1 year ago to a customer's car. at the time of installation, the customer supplied their own Nissan Navara parts. It was a catch can this catch can be caused us a whole bunch of drama . also have no place in the engine bay to put the catch can we had to fit it under the bull bar. doing so this catch can be not suited for a v9x Navara nor was it suited to be placed under the bull bar. the capacity was too small and to work effectively you would have to drain 4 times in-between services. this did not happen and it caused blockage of the PVC breather system causing it to leak at the little black box under the turbo and intake manifold.... yes engine out job. it was a pain in the ass. but since installing the proper catch can with a bigger capacity the problem is no longer there.

Boosting old post, but it's rare to find somebody taking V9X engine out. I am having simmilar problems, 5-10 seconds turbo lag and a lot of smoke giving it gas between 1000 and 2000 rpm, all dirty oily back around PCV and turbo, but when turbo kicks in, it is extremely poweefull, blows out old hose straps on throttle body inlet.

So, how to access PCV and inspect turbo?

Body off or engine out?
Which is easier, less risky and less expensive?

Any tips I appreciate!
