UHO / Undefined Hanging Object

Today I was about to replace my starter motor when I came across this:
(see pictures)
It is a box (hangs loose (in my case)) with electrical wires at the top.
It is located near the starter motor.

Sorry for the bad pictures, but it's not an easy place to take pictures.
Anyone an idea what this is?

I wonder if it's something like a Couplertec rust inhibitor? How many wires are coming out of it? Does it have a light that's on all the time?

Generally things installed by Nissan (like the ECU, distribution modules etc) have wrapped wiring looms that only just have enough slack to undo them.

i wonder if its a coolant pump, possibly a coolant heater.

I don't know the history of the car, but there are some things that are not standard I think.
