Nissan are super-pedantic on the ATF. The manual states ONLY their oil is to be used. They will probably try to avoid any warranty issues if some other oil is in the box.
The big problem with different grades of ATF is that the torque converter is designed around a specific grade and mix of oil.
A lighter oil will allow the torque converter to slip more, so you lose more revolutions of the engine (less efficient), but gear changes should be smoother.
A heavier oil will make the torque converter grab harder, turning the gearbox over more for each engine revolution, but gear changes won't be as smooth.
That balance is the key, and because there are so many widgets inside the gearbox, it really does need to be kept fairly close to spec.
I've had my 40K service done, the ATF was good so it was left intact. We just got back from a 7,000km christmas trip (posting details on this soon) and the gearbox performed wonderfully, not missing a beat - again, I'm on the standard Nissan ATF.
That's not to say that "standard Nissan ATF" isn't made by Castrol and might even be the oil you're looking at - they gotta get it from somewhere!
