My gearbox has started to crunch into 3rd and 4th, 3rd being the worst, have changed the GB oil and no difference at all so was thinking it may be the synchromesh.

Has anyone changed synchro before, how difficult is it to do and where do I buy the new parts from?

Many thanks

I know you can get bearing kits - interesting to find out if you can get syncro's??? There was a guy on here "tango" he works at a Nissan dealer- write him or post search his name and find his latest post.. I'd be interested to know too.. cheers vic

the safest bet would be to remove the gearbox and get a gearbox specialist to replace whats needed inside the cluster gear area.

whats it like when shifting when stationary ? all gars a bit sticky?
i wonder if spigot bearing is sticking.

I've changed the gearbox oil prob 4 or 5 times now..different brands of oil with the same spec all behave differently in my car..best so far has been Nulon full syn and Valv mineral oil.

some I couldnt get the car into 1st or 2nd gear whilst the car was moving

Have you tried Nulon G70 additive yet? A couple tubes of that stuff smoothed out my gear shifts pretty good.

Once you've changed the gearbox oil I don't think you'll ever get it as smooth as it was from factory. Whatever oil they came with was magic!!

To be honest its pretty bad, really has to be forced into 3rd, have managed to find a second hand box so will be replacing this weekend all being well, adding a heavy duty clutch at the same time

Yep. Give it a go if it's still no good then look to rebuild. $500 for bearing kits the $80 a synchro

I have a spare box now so will chuck that in and take the old one apart to have a look, where can you buy the synchro gears from?

Try Nizzbits.com.au. I rebuilt the gearbox in my Kingswood many moons back and once they're apart all the bits look the same, take heaps of picks. I put a gear selector hub in backwards and had to pull it apart again.
