Starter not engaging

Hi, occasionally the starter on my D40 does not engage and makes a horrible screaming noise you know the one teeth spinning on ring gear, then try again and it engages and starts ok and will be ok for days. Anyone have experience of this, could it just be dodgy starter motor or possibly the actual gear on the flywheel is rooted, hope not.

It could be the throw gear on the starter that pushes the gearing to engage with the flywheel, or it could be a missing tooth on the flywheel. ******* of a thing to inspect.
