Hi all.
I have a jap built 08 2.5lt d22.
Lately its been making a juddering noise. Its most audible when i drive slow at half lock on a slight incline. I had someone else drive it while i watched the rear end and you can see the rear wheel judder as it turns slowly.
Has anyone had this problem. Iv been told so far the LSD clutches are loosening up.
I had a problem with the diff at about 30000km. Similar thing, but under warranty. They changed the whole rear end. They blamed it on nissan putting the wrong oil in the diffs from factory. Bull$&@t if you ask me.:wristy:
If it is the diff again, instead of fixing it could i install an arb rear locka? Does this replace all parts in the diff?

What happens if you chock the front wheels, engage 2HI (so you're not turning the front drive shaft), jack the back end up and turn the wheels by hand?

I'd expect juddering from a poorly mounted tyre, but not from a diff issue - especially after they replaced the entire thing!

Are any wheel nuts missing? Undo ALL the wheel nuts on the juddering wheel. Are any studs broken or loose? Is there anything lying between the wheel and the hub that might offset the wheel?

Sounds normal for them if the wrong or old oil is in there. I'd be dropping and replacing the oil to start with. The lsds are very tight in the d22s, even turning a 90deg corner and accelerating in mine I get a bit of tyre squeal..

I wouldn't put it past them having put the wrong oil in again, just get some new oil and maybe change it a couple of times within around 1000km and see how it goes

Second what Bods has said. Old or wrong oil. The d22 lsd is one of the best and i would put a locker in its place unless i had nothing else to put in it. I would put a new lsd in over the locker. Change the oil and run it in then change again. The wrong oil in diff from factory was actually a common issue in the 2.5L first release in 08 and 09. Mine is an 09 and i even had the problem. Nissan changed it under warranty and has been fine since.

So what oil should go in?

Any LSD oil will be fine. If you don't care what brand just look in the book at supercheap/repco/whatever and see what is listed.

Thanks heaps guys, very helpful. Its all making sense now, i took it to a different mechanic for a service a few weeks ago and they told me my diff oil is dirty. I said that it should have been changed 10000km ago by my regular mechanic. They said no way is that oild 10000km old. I just didnt think that oil 50000km old would cause such problems.
Just for my own information is it true that a arb locker replaces all the diffs internals?

Not all the internals, just the center. The crown wheel and pinion aren't replaced unless they are damaged or you want to change ratio (crown wheel is the big gear that drives the center and the pinion is what the driveshaft connects to inside the diff)

According to the service manual the dill oil should be changed every 2 years or normally around 40000km, so it is possible he didn't do it...

I had the oil changed and the mechanic added an anti shudder additive. No more noise he said the oil was defiantly changed 10000km ago, who knows. That worries me more because why would it shudder after 10km old oil? Will see how it goes
