I just purchased the 2012 Navara STX 550 (Spanish built) in Melbourne. It came with stock Goodyear Wrangler tyres 255/65/R17 and standard alloys.

I have changed over to a Falken tyre 285/40/R22 with a Speedy chrome 22 inch rim. Since I have put these on I have noticed that the inbuilt GPS unit (which comes with this model) is no longer accurate. It says that I am approx 30-100m behind my actual location. Travelling at greater speeds (such as on the freeway) seems to make the problem worse and the sat nav gets lost all together.

I have worked out it must be the new rims and tyres as I put my standard wheels back on to check and it was fine.

I have paid a lot of money for my new wheels and really want to use them. Is there anyone who knows how to reset/reconfigure the sat nav system? Or does anyone know of a professional in Melbourne who can help?

I have already tried the Nissan dealership and the company that provided the new tyres and rims and no one has a solution.

This matter is urgent! Please help!!

Definitely weird
the new wheels are only 0.26% larger than stock so thats SFA (gotta love the 1010tire site )
The GPS should be going from its antenna and not have anything to do with wheel size as such

Thanks mate for your reply, after doing a bit more research I think maybe my speedo must be out due to the overall rolling diameter of new wheels being only 15mm larger ?

Still open to any other ideas/solutions.

cheers

Yes true, but maybe cause its an inbult model by Nissan, it may also use the ECU for its speedo readings so that its not different from the cluster speedo, cause if it was then nissan would get another 5 million *******:rambo:nissan ragging comments and service enquiries just from this forum alone...

plug an aftermarket GPS in and see what the diff is... then get back to us.

that was my thinking too, it gets a gps "signal" from the antenna to show your position on the map, but it gets the speed reading from the speedo. if it's calibrated for the factory speedo (allowing for the error nissan uses to set them up...) then it will be out because the speedo is reading "wrong" so the sat nav doesn't know where you are...

i think you'll find most "factory" built in sat nav systems are like this because they have so much error in the speedo they don't want people whinging like krankin said...

I'd try Krankin's suggestion too.

Surprisingly, I found that my ECU was quite accurate with the speed (on standard tyres) and the variation is only in the needle deflection itself (the speedo is not a scientific or digital instrument thus it will have errors itself).

I am surprised that they'd use the ECU speed measurement for the sat-nav system. Most satellite programs can do the speed calc based on the change in position over time (a simple calc). Why change a good formula?

Thanks to everyone for their advice and suggestions. I used Krankin's lead and tried my aftermarket GPS. My speedometer is approx 3km/hr faster than that on the aftermarket GPS. My sat nav must rely on this to work out my location.

Any suggestions on what to do from here? The Nissan dealership have said that the speedometer cannot be corrected. Any advice/solutions would be GREATLY appreciated, or any recommendations as to an auto elec/other professional who can fix this problem?

Thanks again.

There is a couple of places that can recalibrate your speedo...unfortunatly not comming to mind atm....from memory someone on here advertised the service as well...if ithink of them illget back to u...try google...speedo calibration or something

You could do what i do. My 08 stx speedo is out 7 klm/ h according to my after market gps. So i drive at 107 for 100. Annoying? A little, but works ok if you talk yourself into it. Especially since Nissman says they cant do anything to help.

as far as i know there is a jay car kit or a more expensive online version to alter the signal sent from the speed sensor to make up for different tires, from what i am told you just plug them in behind the speedo itself but in your case i would mount it from the speed sensor itself. look it up mate and you should find something

the above statement is 100% untrue...

they can but wont...

unless of course you understand ADR 18/03 and also talk with the mob...

Standards and International Vehicle Safety Standards Branch Department of Infrastructure, Transport Regional Development and Local Government,

who have put it in writing to me that "as a consumer you can request that Nissan (in this case) make the speedometer in your vehicle indicate true speed....

yes fact...

by law you can make them...and understand the actual laws are in the consumers favour with this one...tho nissan wont just roll over and do it...you really have to be prepared to push it and persist...it wont happen overnight but you can make it happen...It can be done...

Unfortunately won't work in the D40. The D40 uses the averaged inputs from the ABS sensors to calculate vehicle speed.

Thank you to everyone who made suggestions to my query.

Problem solved!

FOR ANYONE WHO BUYS THE NEW 2012 NAVARA STX 550 AND WANTS TO MODIFY WHEELS AND RIMS:

Once I changed the wheels to exact stock wheel rolling diameter, it fixed the problem. The sat nav is now accurate. So anyone who wants to change their wheels must ensure that the rolling diameter is the same as when purchased!

Thanks again!!

I'm led to believe the cluster assy is 'set' in japan, or the place of manufacture and dealers here are not able to change them...
Unless of course nissan hq allows it.

but again, one can use the current laws to have that altered...if one can be bothered.

....
