Calling all Perth D40 owners - who do you trust with fault finding your Navara?

My 2010 Spanish built, 175,000 kms, has been giving me issues for about 4 months now - looping (drooping?) revs at idle on first start-up, sometimes stalling at idle. After a stall it will usually start up again after 5-10 seconds of cranking then behave like nothing happened. Once warm it seems to not have any issues.

Plugged in a handheld code reader, no codes :(

Yesterday it stalled while rolling in traffic when I depressed the clutch to shift down from 3rd (yikes) so time to take it to a specialist.

Have gone through the following fixes so far:

Replaced battery
Replaced SCV (not sure about the quality of the replacement part tbh)
Replaced fuel filter
Replaced air filter (the revs at idle improved after this)
Checked for vacuum leaks (probably not as thoroughly as I could have)
Check glow plug operation (all good)

Thanks in advance! Happy to pay for quality workmanship and good service, not keen on paying a technician to chase their tail for hours on end. Located Victoria Park so preferably local.

Welcome to the forum.

Finding a good mechanic isn't easy. That said, we took ours to a non-Navara guy in Bathurst and they did a fantastic job. Unfortunately that's nowhere near you!

There are some things to try with your car, to narrow things down.

Your problem could be:
* MAFS sensor. This devil sits in the air intake just out from the air filter box. It's a credit-card-sized piece of $400 so be careful with it! Don't ever put anything solid inside it, spray electrical contact cleaner only.

* Fuel "leak". You won't see fuel come out because it's a low-pressure system prior to the pump. However, air can get in and allow fuel to drain back to the tank, causing hard starting. It's really easy to test for: prime the system. You should only be able to squeeze the bulb about 4-5 times tops, until it gets really firm. If you can squeeze more than this (particularly in the mornings) there's a leak - so keep pumping, which will pressurise the system and diesel will start to come out of the leak. Find it, fix it, problem gone. It might be the o-ring on the water sensor, not necessarily one of the fuel lines (mine was a fuel line last time, the O-ring the time before).

* EGR valve. Unfortunately, emission controls require the EGR valve which isn't supposed to operate at idle or full throttle, only mid-range, but when it starts getting faulty all bets are off. Your engine will run fine without EGR - in fact, EGR dampens combustion (which is why it's an issue at idle). You could just replace the gasket on the EGR valve side of the EGR tube (the gold thing that runs around the front of the motor) with a blanking plate (you can make it from 1mm stainless or mild steel).

Your problem won't be the vacuum hoses - the turbocharger doesn't operate at idle anyway. The vacuum isn't coming from the manifold, it comes from a vacuum pump that's on the right hand side of the motor. The brakes are also assisted by vacuum, so if the vacuum system ever lets go, you can sometimes tell because your brakes are not working like they used to.

Most of that's fairly cheap and easy to do. Let us know how it goes!

Edit: fixed the information about the blanking plate.

Hi there is Autofix in Kelmscott supposed to be the guru on yd25 I’ve only used him to get my scv as he sells the upgraded version however I know a couple of people who have used him will probably fix the issue but I’ve been told he charges like a wounded bull would be interested in what the problem is PS did you do a fuel pump reset after changing the scv

Thanks for having me! Been a proud Navara owner for 7 years now, enjoyed most of it.

Cheers for the advice Old Tony, very concise and easy to step through.

Went through the following yesterday -

Blanked off the EGR
Cleaned the MAF
Cleaned throttle body
Re-bled the fuel rails and tested fuel system for leaks (o-ring wasn't sitting properly but no leaks)

Started her back up and.... no change. Just sat there hunting for revs until it eventually stalled. Cue the swearing.

After recharging with a coffee the old man suggested going through an ECU/fuel pump reset out of desperation (we did this after replacing the SCV in December). Started up, and wouldn't you know, everything was running smoothly again.

So I'm chalking this one up to electronic wizardry and assuming the fuel system reset back in December missed a beat. Thanks for the recommendation TCN, will keep him in mind for future head scratchers.

That's good to hear.......whish I could solve my problem as easy as that lol

Oop, false alarm. The hunting got worse and it's started stalling everytime is returns to idle.

Going to try O2 sensors but otherwise time to take it to the shop - settled on Robson brothers. Fingers crossed!

Hi Navara Forum thanks for accepting me,
I have the same issue after change head cylinder with new one. Terrible stall every time engine on idle but it is intermittent. Initially drove for 30 mins no stall at all, then drpve again stall engine everytime on idle. Please update us whats come up from Robson. Living in south Perth in Thornlie area. TA
