No revs in reverse?

Hi all
I was just on a mountain road with very tight switch-back turns, 2 where to tight to do in one go, so a quick 3 point manoeuvre..easy BUT the D40 wouldn't rev in reverse?...2k max, I managed to inc back enough but worrying. Neutral/ perfect/forward gears perfect... is there a inhibitor or such like ?
