Hi all, new at this! About to sell the 2x4 Hi lux and move into the dizzy world of 4x4! Have my eye on a 2007 STX for a good price and in really good condition. Can anyone update my limited knowledge and confirm whether the clutch and engine overheating(?) problems were sorted by the time that model was released? It's a good buy and don't want to miss it.

Welcome to the forum. Any of these utes - whether it's Nissan, Ford, Holden etc - that have dual mass flywheels can suffer from clutch issues if they're driven inappropriately. Heavy towing and in particular things like boat ramp work can reduce the lifespan of the clutch/flywheel dramatically.

Upgrading to a single mass flywheel (the kinda flywheel you might think of as "ordinary") and a heavy duty clutch will pretty much remove this issue, although you still have to try and not ride the clutch too much - it's a heavy vehicle.

As for overheating, I haven't read much about them overheating a lot. I guess you have to make sure the airflow into the radiator isn't impeded, and your fan is working normally - your mechanic should take care of this. Always use the proper coolant blah blah - the usual stuff.

If you are unsure of the vehicle's history, one of your first tasks might be to replace every bit of fluid in the thing - brake fluid, both diffs, gearbox, engine oil & coolant. Don't skimp on the engine oil, it has to keep the turbocharger lubricated too.

Thanks Tony,
Had a friend with a Patrol of '05 type vintage and the clutch went after a very short while. No boat or caravan work. Nissan refused to honour any warranty. Cost him about 5 grand to remedy, after soliciters etc. This was the specific enquiry, thanks for the other tips, too.
The heating thing was a mention from a salesman about the proximity of the common rail to the water pump; causing the number 1 cylinder to fire improperly, due to extra heat radiated from the pump. No, I hadn't read nor heard of it either in my limited dealings.
No argument about the replacement fluids that will happen, as well as filters; and if plugs and points were fitted they'd go too!!!
Have you any idea of the Kw output of that model 2.5l engine?

Thanks
Hugh

I'm sure there are lemons in the Patrol range too!

The 2007 specifications can be found here. 128kW, 403NM just like the 2009 model.

Cant say I have read to much on the overheating in D40's.

Not what Id call common anyway.
