Hi all, my name is Nathan and I just pruchased a 2004 D22 Navara with ZD30 engine and 5sp manual. Also scored a tradies trailer at the same time and I am a apprentice carpenter.

Picked the car up from Cowra last Sunday and drove it back to Canberra. Got as far as Yass and it started to boil. Waited and then on the road again ony to have it boil again just short of Murrumbateman. Pulled the thermostat out (stuffed) and continued on to Canberra only to get 2k's short of Hall. Ended up having it towed to my mechanics.

The verdict is a cracked head and all pistons are cracked. No sign of any problems when I took it for a test drive, so not impressed. Now I have no idea what I am going to do with it :(

What a *******! Sorry to hear about your bad luck. The car looks tidy. Your best bet is probably a new or recon engine. Probably cheaper than a rebuild unless you did it yourself.

Reading Roodogs feedback on EBAY it looks like he/they an arrogant prick to deal with if the transaction goes south.....

Welcome to the forum!

If your engine is already stripped to that point then you're halfway home. You have a number of alternatives now.

1) Source replacement (perhaps aftermarket - Repco, BM Higginbottom or genuine Nizzbits, Nissan) head, pistons (hone the bores first if scuffed), and a gasket kit. You COULD remove the block and check the big ends as well, but if the engine ran smoothly you could assume all is good - if you had the coin and the time though, they'd be worth checking if you were already this close to them.

2) Source a second-hand motor. www.niss4x4.com.au is one possibility, eBay another, although that's caveat emptor.

3) Buy another ZD30-powered car and take the best bits from both to build an even better car. That'll be a labour of love.

The Navara's ZD30 is a solid motor, for it to have cracked EVERY piston and the head as well it must have had a good flogging. This is the first I've read of a Navara ZD30 copping it this badly. You'd have to wonder if the previous owner had a problem with the thermostat, couldn't figure it out and decided to sell it before it blew up? If it was a car yard that sold it to you, it will have a warranty and you have recourse with them.

Unfortunately it was private which leaves mu up s*it creek, will be trying for a refund from the seller. Accorning to fair trading I dont have a leg to stand on unless it was sold with the knowledge it had problems.

It is apprent that the owner was aware of the over heating problems as the heater had been disconnected, the thermostat drilled and a new radiator fitted. Will now later on today if a refund is going to happen.

The worlds full of arseholes with no conscious.

Doesn't help that nissans temp gauges only tell you after the fact that it's cooked.

Well spoke to the "seller" and he is committed in helping $$$ to get it back on the road, I can only hope, we will have to wait and see

I know it's a ZD30 but I have a feeling that if it's a Patrol motor, then it won't bolt straight up to the Nav bell housing as the bolt pattern on the gearbox is different.
Someone else on here will know for sure, or double check with the seller before you plonk down your hard earned.

Pain in the ass, 4x4s cost an arm and a leg to blood fix.
The only thing I dont like about these rebuilt motors like the link you provided is that you only get a 12 month warranty . If its been rebuilt properly surely they could offer the same length of guarantee as the original manufacturer offered? (as long as its serviced properly )
I think for the amount of money involved(unless your in a really tight finical spot) I would prefer to get my regular mechanic to do the job(as I can trust him) rather than a stranger.
Good luck.

Same bolt patterns, different turbo oil return. Patrols return to sump. You can drill this out. Have done before but it was a bare block.
