Hi all Im a newbie to here, I dont have a NAVARA but I have a mate who has and he is not computer literate, not electrical literate (to the point of being dangerous), and reasonably Mechanical and he has an electrical problem with his 1994 diesel ute. He has found (he never noticed it before?) that his parking and tail lights come on as soon as he switches on the ignition even with the light switch disconnected (he replaced it) . I have checked and this is the case. My main question is do these vehicles have this as a safety feature a la Volvo and others that run with Park & Tail on as long as ignition is on, or has he a problem. The light switch works normally.
He has also had problems with left hand headlight and parker gradually all fail one after another and he just ran wires from one side to the other to get them going again.... sounds like a connector somewhere to me but I dont know the vehicle (didn't!!!) but looks like I soon will.
Any help would be most appreciated.
Regards,
Don.....

Welcome to the forum.

If your mate is
not electrical literate (to the point of being dangerous)
then perhaps the best advice I could give is to take the vehicle to an auto electrician.

Once modifications like you've described have been made, it's very difficult to say that this particular thing or that thing has caused a problem.

As for the standard vehicle, I've not heard of one that brings the tail and parker lights on with the ignition unless the lights are on. It sounds like there's a crossed wire somewhere, and might be something to do with that wire connected across from one headlight to the other.

I wish him (and you!) luck with it!

Thanks for the comments. The local auto elec didn't want to know about it and the nearby Nissan Mechanic said it was common, and to cut the wire and put a switch in. Sounds a bit off to me. So my next question is where can I get a wiring diagram for this vehicle, I am more than capable of tracking it down but not without a map, I don't want to go cutting looms open unless I have to, it becomes to messy to properly tidy up. From one of the posts I have read there is a main connector under the drivers seat area for the rear lights and another under the dash which may be the one that runs from the left side lights to join with the right side lights. Do Nissans suffer from connector problems? especially when operated under dusty conditions?
We suffer with not so good mechanics around here, this ute needed a new heavy duty clutch and was taken to a highly recommended workshop for the job.The gearbox was sent to a specialist for re bearing and came back with a note that it didn't need them, so the flywheel was machined and the clutch plate and pressure plate were replaced, it was imposible to get ito gear so it was towed 85 k back to the gearbox place and deemed to be ok. the owner got it back and it was still crook so we had a look at it and discovered that they had only adjusted the push rod on the slave cyl for clearance and not adjusted the pedal travel and that was all the problem was. Understandably there is not a lot of confidence around here.
Sorry for the long post but it was needed to show how much we need people like there are here to get the "good oil" not fairy stories.

You could check out ebay for the manual I got the one for mine for about $7 and it has a fairly comprehensive wiring diagram. You still have to be a little careful as there are some places where the manual lists the wrong colours but that is to be expected. Not sure if they have the manual for your model on there but it might be worth a try for a few bucks.

At a guess I would say its the stalk for the lights.

Dion on here is clued up on D21's, he will pop up on here soonish.

Dave.

Hi Dave, the complete light switch has been replaced. Also by disconnecting the plug from the stalk the result is still the same.

Hi Dave some further information, according to the Drivers Handbook the european models did have the facility that I questioned before, theparkers, tail lights and low beam all come on when the ignition is switched on. Later todayI will get some more info from the ID plates on the ute and try and see if this ute may have been made to those spec's. A long shot I know but its the only way to find out. The mate never bought this vehicle new and has had it for 10 years that I know of. He has at my suggestion disconnected the large connector under the dash and removed a large quantity of dirt and dust from it and given it a large dose of CRC to clean it but he hasn't tried to reconnect the lights back to normal yet, I am guessing this is the connector that connects the left and right sides of the engine bay wiring.
