Howdy all

I have been the owner of a 2005 Nissan Navara 4WD ute for six months now.

It has a turbocharged ZD30 3ltr diesel engine that has peformed beautifully but I am a bit concerned about the negative feedback about the ZD30 engine!

Being new to turbocharged engines what sort of servicing does it need, how often and am I able to do it myself?

It has done 46,000km.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Welcome Mate.

I have heard a lot of good things about the Navara ZD30, but then you will have to chat to the guys with them.

With servicing I service mine every 5000km. Did the last myself but next it will be going into a shop to get a full look over again. Just make sure to let the turbo cool down once you finish driving and you should be right.

Welcome to the forum!

I think the Patrols were the ones equipped with the grenades, the Navaras were fine. Pretty sure Dave's is a ZD30 and it's bulletproof.

Nissan want you to service it every 10,000km. Some owners replace the oil every 5,000km - diesel oil does get dirty fast and the harder you drive it the faster it blackens.

I think Krafty knew someone that hadn't serviced their diesel in 100,000km or more and it still went okay. Don't know how that happened, but then sometimes along comes a paraplegic that just gets up and walks again so I guess cars can have miracles too.

I have a 2006 ZD30 Navara. They are a good motor, most of the bad stories you may hear about them arise where they were used in the early 2000-2003 patrols with a different turbo and ecu etc etc.

I change the oil and oil filter in mine every 5000klms and have it serviced at a mechanic at the 10,000klm intervals.

The only other thing you may wish to look into is adding an intercooler as they are not a standard fitment in the ZD30 Navara. Not only for colder air but to catch the turbo if it lets go, which can happen in any turbo diesel.

welcome to the forum.
I wouldnt worry to much about the bad reports on the zd30 as they only really had probs with them in the early patrols, they run different turbo, ecu, ect

you can easily service it yourself. Some do oil and filter every 5000km but the book says every 10000km, personally i use to drop the oil every 5 and do both oil and filter every 10000km. As for the diesel filter i use to do mine every 20000km and would do the air filter as it needed as this will depend on where you have been driving, eg - very dusty rd i would do it after that trip.

what you should do is ALWAYS idle it down, especially if you have been giving it a hard time. A turbo timer is a great investment. This is important with turbo engines that do not run an intercooler because if the turbo lets go it will throw all the shrapnel up and into the motor. So looking after the turbo by not leaving it sitting in boiling oil may help with the life of the bearings inside the unit. Allot of guys on this forum have installed intercoolers quiet easily, which is a good idea and a bit of piece of mind if you are worried about it and it will also give you a mild gain in performance.

Anyway i think there a great motor, i personally got over 350 000km out of mine with out a prob. Just keep the servicing up and keep your eyes and ears on how its running and it will go for ever.
