hi all ive got a 1999 D22 3.2LD. its a non turbo and i dont wont to put one on it but i wont more power out of it. how can i get more???????

The only way you will get more power is a turbo, that or drop a v8 in it. They are a mechanical injection diesel, it's never going to be fast no matter what you spend on it without going for some form of forced induction, either turbo or supercharger.

In saying that, you could put extractors and an exhaust on it, but for that cost you could just about turbo it anyway and have a lot more gain than you would from just doing the exhaust...

Or you could drive around in low range all the time, lol. It won't give it more power, it will be a lot slower but it will feel like its got heaps of power, haha

its a qd32, if looked after it will go forever, just it will take a while, even a turbo won't make a huge difference to acceleration.

Welcome to the forum.

Normally aspirated engines can only have a certain amount of fuel because they can only draw in a small amount of air. That's physics, it can't be beaten. If you overfuel it, there's no way to get enough air in to combust all the fuel, so all you'll do is create more soot and shorten the distance between service station stops.

However, you can put more air in. The fuel that's going in isn't fully combusting anyway (that's what the black smoke is all about). Adding more air - so that the fuel combusts better - means more complete combustion = more downforce = more power for the same amount of fuel.

In order, you'll get more horsepower out of the following mods (most to least):

* Turbocharger
* Chip
* Intercooler
* Exhaust
* EGR Mod

The caveat is lifespan. The more beans you try to get out of the motor, the less the motor will live.

I wasn't going to go there at all, but I've heard of claims like 30% more power - but ONLY in turbocharged vehicles. In a NA engine, adding gas may not do much because it's starving for air to combust the diesel that's there anyway - the gas isn't going to help.

There's also water injection, alcohol injection, misting the intercooler ... but they're all post-turbocharger and you'd need the other mods first - especially the exhaust, because NA engine exhausts are usually very small!

There probably can be some modest gains in having more free flowing exhaust and induction.

Perhaps extractors and larger bore exhaust. Don't go to big tho.

Cold air pickup for induction and a with a little creativity with the rest of it. Look at things, like the airbox, air filter, even getting rid of things like tight 90 deg elbows can help.

With these mods you may be able to turn up the delivery of the pump a little but wouldn't be with the injection timing.

Good thing is it will have little or no effect on the reliabilty.
