Hi all,

I'm looking at upgrading my 2013 navara 2.5.
Currently it has 450nm and 147kw

Main reason why i want an upgrade, is to tow my new 7 meter 2.8 ton boat.
Any suggestions? I have about a 15k budget, I have thought about trading for the stx550, however I'm just unsure what can be pulled out of the 4 cylinder to get me the power I need without having to upgrade cars. I'm also unhappy with the turbo lag and off the line acceleration I'm getting. This is my first diesel truck and i think I might be asking to much....

Suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

I currently tow a 6 meter edencraft with seems fine to tow however I have had a few people telling me that my navara won't be able to tow the boat I just bought from usa

How much is it?
Can't bothered going through the sales pitch on the phone.

Hey I pulled roughly 23-2400kg boat with no dramas at all, Cruised the hills (drop gears dont stomp the throttle, could maintain speed on most hills in 5th, Would stay clear of using too much 6 on level ground) and a dream to drive on the highway. Pulling out of the ramp i did a 2nd low range slow pull and no issues at all... Straight back into 2wd at the top..
It'll do 3000kg no worries..

I know what ur talking about with the lag down low and prob the only thing im worried about and not burn the clutch out, Im looking at 3' straight through exhaust and the hard pipe to fix this I think..

leave the poor old 2.5 alone
its doing a great job getting 450nm and 147kw
remember.......
there is NO substitute for cubes
if your not happy with the current 2.5 then you need a v6 in my opinion

EDIT
don't chip it with anything other than an injector extend chip, fuel rail chips ARE dangerous in crd,s and I would seriously question the figures quoted above
I checked out torqit's website but couldn't find any info on what system they are using
one pic shows rail chip, another shows injector chip

it is possible to get more grunt from the 2.5 but they are already close to there limit from factory (in the d40)
anything other than egr block, minor I/c mods and a good exhaust risks longevity and reliability.....IMO

cheers

Our new van is 2.5T and mine's a 126kW - I'm happy with its performance. I'm also happy with the aged pension that I receive, and the chicken I won at bingo on Saturday. This week I'm hoping for a whole meat tray - bring on legs eleven!!!

The lag is a function of how the car gets its power. A similar D22 to mine produces less horsepower but brings its power on more smoothly and feels like it has more torque down low (it may not have, since the D22 I drove was also about a tonne lighter than my D40).

Lag comes from turbocharger piping, turbocharger response time, factors affecting combustion and the general expectations of the vehicle. It's no sports car!

You can't replace ALL of the piping, the engine moves on its mounts a fair bit and the intercooler doesn't move at all.

EGR and PCV both impact on combustion, which in turn affects the turbocharger's ability to spool as well as the available power in all ranges. Fiddling with either is illegal but nearly undetectable. Watch for a CEL after blocking the EGR - if you get one, drill a 4mm hole in the middle of your EGR blanking plate. Flow rates will be vastly reduced, but the CEL is thrown because a flow sensor indicates zero flow when the EGR valve commands for some.

PCV is from blow-by - it's exhaust gas AND oil. Do NOT vent it directly to under your car, not only is that dangerous but the oil will accumulate on your tailgate. Fit a catch can with the inlet pipe travelling towards the bottom of the canister into some steel wool shavings, and THEN vent it, preferably onto the outside of the exhaust. That way, if a little oil gets past the catch can, it'll burn off, give you a burning oil smell if you sniff around hard enough and remind you to empty the blinkin' can!!

Really though, Sparra has hit the nail on the head. More cubes = more pubes, pure and simple. The V6 is going to have an easier time pulling the new boat.

Hard pipe to I/C and a throttle controller will put a smile on your face for a few hundred.

The sparra is right. It's a fairly highly stressed engine for starters without trying to screw to much more out of it.

Sure you can go more but play and will pay wilth a shorter life of the engine.
