It sounds like your expectations of you D40 a higher then that of its capabilities, and maybe your own capabilities. As Nathand22 has stated, The Navara has IFS not a solid front axle meaning it just cant flex like the GQ or Maverick.
The best thing you could do is educate yourself about your vehicle, its capabilities and four wheel driving itself. You could do a 4x4 course, they are fantastic and what you can learn is invaluable. You should read your D40s manual thoroughly, if you had you would have known the correct procedure to engage low range. Also you could start off on some more moderate tracks rather then being thrown in the deep end, and gradually step up as you modify your truck and as your ability/experience gets better.
