Hey guys my dad is currently in the market for a d40 i have my d22 and love it but he wants the d40 anyway he is looking at a 2008 stx with arb winch bar canopy new tyres and cheap winch and spotties only got 75k on the clock what sould we watch out for and what can we look for to see if its going to caus us any problems. Also what would it be worth ? The guy wants 27500 is this a fair price ? Dad knows the guy through work so dosnt want to rip him off or get ripped of himself
 
Timing chains break or need replacing a lot.

people who own D40's will tell you otherwise but we usually get 1 or more per week posting about the crap timing chains.

if you can't hear any noises at the front of the engine that would indicate it needs replacing then it should be ok I guess, just beware its big $$$ to replace it out of warranty, apart from that they are an ok ute, bit hard to park but you get that with most dual cabs.

see if your dad can stretch to a new one, only $10k more for peace of mind plus it gets the better 140kw engine.

The 2008 does have the single row timing chain so if the front's a bit noisy you might want to put aside for a new chain - preferably a stronger one - see yd25.com.au for a great solution (if it's needed).

Hoses are the next problem, particularly the vacuum lines on the turbo actuator. They're not expensive to replace.

If it's a manual it might have a dual mass flywheel which is a pain in the ass for towing. If it's an auto no drama - but the manual needs to have the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate removed and replaced with a single-mass flywheel and HD clutch (Exedy make one that's orright).

Other than that, they're not bad. I would hope the previous owner got sick of the rear suspension dragging its ass around and upgraded the leaf springs already but just check that you can fit your hand sideways above the rear tyre under the guard. Look at my sig - that's a sagged original suspension.

And with all that said - the previous poster's advice about stretching for a new one has a LOT of merit. More powerful engine that uses between 2 and 3 LPHK less fuel - that adds up to a bit of a saving on its own (over 20,000km that's between 400 and 600 litres of diesel). More features inside, and a new car warranty. The new 140kW (now called the D40 ST, because the STX has the V6 diesel) has an electronic turbo actuator and it looks like they've gotten the bugs out of that too, so a new 4-banger isn't a bad deal.

Either way, good luck with the purchase.
 
might pay to just take the timing cover off and check how much adjustment is left on the tensioner
 
Usage and service history will be the big things to look for but that probably goes without saying.

Upgraded springs and shocks would be handy. If there still the O.E you can guarantee they will be stuffed.

Some models had chalky disks. Check em.

Transfer case drive shaft seals.

As mentioned timing chain noise/ rattles.

All sounds bad but probably noting you wouldn't check on other dual cabs with similar age.

AS for price. Probably a bit much considering how much a newy is these days. K's are great for age but there no getting away from the fact it still is a 5 year old vehicle.
