Hi Everyone. Will be purchasing a D40 Series 4 in Dec. Just getting on board early to get info about accessories I want to have put on. Also where the best place to purchase in Sydney or possibly Melbourne.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum, Jarrod!

Are you going to be towing, offroading, hitting the beach, desert, mountains? Each has its own unique requirements. You might want a combination, and need to get a spare set of rims for mud tyres as well as some all-terrains to handle road + sand. Sand is going to require a decent compressor and even dirt/rock offroading could use a small pressure drop in the tyres to make the ride a little smoother.

Towing heavy stuff means a decent hitch - insist on Hayman Reese, not the Nissan-branded one - and a decent proportional brake controller. A reversing camera is another often-overlooked item, it helps you line the towball up.

We opted for rubber mats inside so that dirt and stuff didn't ruin the carpet. Tinted windows really helped during our summer, where we travelled up from Mildura to Broken Hill and then east.

We also found a canopy with lift-up windows has been an absolute blessing. I'd hate to think how difficult things would be with a hard lid or how much stuff could go missing with a soft cover.

The headlights on the '09 model aren't fantastic, so we added some IPF driving lights. I should have gotten the round ones, and should have bought them aftermarket because Nissan's ones have 100W globes in and the others are 130W. You might like Lightforces instead, or Hellas.

Anyway, I better leave some stuff for the other guys to talk about!

Welcome Jarrod,

Have you done much off road work before? If not I recommend that you do one of the many courses available. I did mine through a nissan club and learnt alot about safety aspects of 4X4 ing as well as the correct way to do hill stall starts, snatching and general bush driving.
Doing it through a club is usually cheaper than a training company and it gives you some contacts to get off road with aswell.

to save you vehicle from damage in the wild it pays to get some decent side steps that attach to the chassis (the Nissan ones attach to the body and can do more damage than they save) and a bash plate that at least covers as far back as the sump ( If you check out the underneath of the navara you can see how vunerable the sump is) .

Hope this helps and have fun out there!!

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the welcome.
I wont be doing any serious off road driving but I have completed a 4x4 driving course that covered the things mentioned by Red Dog.
Plan to have sports lid, snorkel and tow pack fitted to start with. If I end up doing anything more serious I will add more where appropriate.
I dont intend to tow anything bigger than a 6x8 trailer and the odd small boat.

Old.Tony, are you happy with your Nissan snorkel? I'm tossing up between it and the Safari. Veronica looks good.

Cheers

Not sure if that comment means you are happy to travel up to 1000ks just to buy a new car but don't bother rushing from dealer to dealer to dealer trying to price compare or get them to compete with each other. Trying a few dealers is a wise option but you'll find after the first few the ******** meters will start going off and you'll end up with too much to contend with.

Some dealers offer more for a trade in, some offer less, they all price add-ons differently, but by the time you hunted out a dozen dealers you'll find the prices aren't really that much different, especially where there is good competition. Sure a saving of a few grand is good for your bottom line but if you've spent a lot of k's and fuel getting that few grand then the savings aren't that great.

I doubt you'll get a huge price difference between capital cities and on the stock truck the differences wont be worth traveling for, but if you add a trade in and some decent extras that that sales department can write off to the parts department making their bottom line better you'll find a better deal. You will also find a better deal with a dealer who wants your trade in to put on his lot as opposed to taking it to put into the auctions.

Oh and Welcome to the Forums

My snorkel is fine, it lies closer to the A pillar than a Safari and I really couldn't give a toss about a rotating head since the airbox handles water anyway (the air filter element is above the outlet of the snorkel and the piping to the turbo is above the filter element).

The phone and email are powerful tools when it comes to getting a decent price on a new vehicle. Have done this plenty of times.

I am halfway between Sydney And Melbourne so not too far to drive back after flying up. Hoping Sydney has the best deal as I will be flying back in from Europe start of December and would drive it home.

Don't have a trade in as I will be paying cash.

Thanks for the advice.

Thanks for the info about the snorkel Old.Tony. I am going to go with the Nissan for the same reasons you mentioned.

Cheers

mate cash is king... you'll be able to get pretty much whatever deal you want out of them.

Wish that was true when I was looking, cars are the only thing I've found where cash doesn't get a decent discount. One dealer was happy to drop a further $3K off if I went for Nissan Finance. Of course they make more money when the convince a buyer to use their finance company and over the term of the loan it would have cost me more than the saving not to use cash but they weren't going to drop the price that $3K just cause I was paying cash.
