Help To Identify What This In-Line Device Near Fuel Tank

Hey,

if anyone can help me identify what the device in the image please? I original thought it was a fuel filter, But not sure may be something else. It looks like its on either the delivery or return line; I haven't traced one to check which one it is yet. It might be a one way valve or a Breather Valve?

By the way I've had the tank overflow on me when I filled it to full without the pump nozzle trigger releasing it self. Also the under side components including moving parts and suspension parts were caked with mud and soil literally everywhere. It used to belong to a logging company so they must have been driving it into the forest on the daily. I reckon the mud and soil got into the tank and into the fuel system and devices like this thing here and probably into the tank pump at hose joints.

Not sure what that is*, but I've also had the tank overflow on me a when fueling up couple of times, I have a suspicion to the cause of that. On the right side of the fuel filler pipe, near the cap, there's a small hose about 6 or 8 inches long, it goes from the top of the filler pipe then back into the filler pipe a bit lower. I suspect some fuel gets caught in there and stops the filler pipe from breathing when you fuel up.
I'm only thinking that because I use to get as much fuel into the tank as I could, then the next time I went to fuel up, I'd end up with a shoe full of diesel, not a great start to the day. So now when I fill the tank, I only go as far as the first click on the gun and I haven't had it happen since.

But do you have any more information about the check valve and why its there? I've started a new thread about it since I have pulled out my fuel tank because I was going to give her some TLC and clean it out as well as find out why i cant hold pressure between my lift pump and fuel tank.

I think I will test the valve to see if it works correctly.

Sorry for the late reply, I didn't notice any notifications.
I just checked that link, worked fine for me.
All a check valve does is allow air or a liquid to flow in one direction and not the other. I'd say that this is on your delivery line and is there to maintain fuel pressure in the lines by stopping it from gravity draining back into your tank.

Just saw your new post about that check valve. So I guess my guess was wrong. The "eng" direction indicator threw me off a little.
But I did learn something though. It was only just yesterday I was looking at that vent pipe on the firewall and wondered where it went. Now I know.

Yeah, it looks like the non return/one way valve. Try it and you should find you can blow through in only one direction. Can't remember which line it's on. I know I did some work on mine years ago after getting a bad batch of fuel (had to drop the tank and blow out the lines, replace all the rubber lines) and forgot to put it back on lol. It's sitting around in the shed somewhere.
