Hi, I have recently brought a Navara 2008 D40 and towed a camper trailer for the first time - did a 3 hour trip - there is now a smell of gearbox oil evident in the cabin - has anyone had a similar problem, do the gearboxes tend to overheat? Cheers Brett

Obviously it's a manual. The clutches get hot, they have a dual mass flywheel which is a mongrel of a thing, but not many reports on gearbox problems.
Sometimes hear of transfer case leaks (also gearbox oil) - jump underneath and look at that.
The common reason for smelling it is the boot around the gear lever is split, cracked or has come loose.

Probably a split boot around the gear stick.

Yes Tony it is a manual, I had a look underneath and there is no oil what so ever that's why I thought it was strange particularly when I had been towing prior to that no smell was evident. If the boot was cracked would you smell the oil prior to that or just because of the clutch getting hot?

Hot clutches smell different, like burning brakes. Gearbox oil is distinctive. The cracked boot is what lets the gearbox smell into the cabin. If your boot is intact and installed properly then the smell is coming from somewhere else, perhaps a transmission cooler that's been installed up the front and the smell is entering the air intake for the cabin? It's unusual for a transmission cooler to be put in a manual but it's possible.
The only other thing up front that smells like that is your front diff. How's it look?

On SOME D40s the gearbox breather was turned around the wrong way and was facing the cabin air inlet, so when the gearbox "breathed out" the cabin "breathed in" and everyone got to smell first gear.
