what did it cost ya for ya second hand one if ya dont mind me asking

I got a wrecked Terrano for $1000, I'll be using the engine and gearbox together. Some year...

I was quoted $800 for a second hand gearbox by itself, but that's rural prices, where there's no competition.

These boxes really are not suited to towing as it really brings out their inherent weakness.

Is the auto any better for towing?

Yeah. And the RE4R01A, as attached to the TD27, is the same box bolted to the QD32ETi, so there's a fair bit of excess capacity.

So what would be the best way to go rekit the gearbox i have or get a reco one if it is the gearbox ?

Purpose? Cost? What are you doing with your Nav? Is it a critical business vehicle? Does it tow a lot? Go off road on tricky tracks? Then maybe a reco is the way to go.

Mines just a local runabout, for trips to the tip, etc, so I've gone with a second hand one.

Get some quotes for each.

try and find out exactly whats wrong with it so you dont get ripped which ever way you go.

Yep i think ill get a meachnic over sthi weekend and see if he can suss it out for me
BUt i think ill also what till it goes bang before i do anything .
I use it as a fishing rig go to the river for a fish and tow the boat only a 4.2 fiberglass tri hull not to heavy either

Seems to be ok at this stage but time will tell

like heaps of balck soot out the back

Your injectors are worn out. Get them serviced by a diesel specialist.

had then all redone and still does it
