Holy hell.
If this is what a DMF is usually like it is no wonder the things are a problem. It actually explains a lot about the way my Xtrail drives as I am pretty certain it has one.

I never looked into them but always assumed that they were simply a rubber coupled setup like a harmonic balancer. I can see some advantage in them as they allow a much lighter mass to smooth out the vibrations so engines can be a lot snappier (I will admit that the response of the Xtrail diesel I replaced my Nav with is a bit of a shock) but bloody hell what a way to complicate something that used to be just a simple lump of metal!
