Hi all:

Just a quick hello from a newbie to this forum. I've driven Fords for the last 35 years, got fed up with the crap "customer service", so bought a '12 Navara RX cab chassis 4wd with auto tranny. I use it to do some work deliveries, but also do a bit of shooting on my bush block in Gippsland Vic, so the kids spotlight from the back on the tray, and i carry a bit of firewood home. Whilst it's much more comfortable than my current model FG falcon CC ute, it's also much thirstier, currently using 15l of diesel to do 100 klms. And I baby it, rarely going over 3000 revs, although i do boot it every now and then. Currently done 5000klms. The sticker on the windscreen when I bought it suggested i should get around 10.5l per 100k. I guess i'm gunna get absloutly nowhere with the dealer as usual (going by the "ford experience") Anyone have any ideas?

Cheers to all:cheers!:

Welcome to the forums.

Economy has a lot to do with the driver and his right foot. Some owners have had genuine issues with injectors and the like but in general it's usually the right foot. The biggest problem is that over the internet it's nearly impossible to judge the way a person drives and apparently when we discuss economy everyone drives like a granny.

You could get a Scangauge (or other such ECU reader) that monitors real time economy (real time is actually every 2 seconds) and you may be able to pick areas where your right foot is the problem but if it is mechanic then it's definitely hard to get any sense out of Nissan.

have you got a snorkel installed at all? just I remember reading someone had nissan install a snorkel on their car and it had a sock stuck down the air intake, poor AF ratio will cause poor economy.

Mate your doing better then me.. I get 18l per 100 and I flog it most of the time.. I had a v6 hilux before and I used to get 650k from a 70ltr tank and I flogged that too so not sure what to say but navaras have poor fuel economy..

Not all Navaras get poor economy there is plenty of people on here reporting good figures for a two tonne wind break, and 2012's should get better than 15's on average

+1. You need to look at how you're driving it. If your babying it everywhere/ running to higher gear/ never hitting boost then the motor isn't working as it was designed to.

Edit. It's a bit harder with an auto

It's also a case of watching how you use your foot.

Accelerator, brake, accelerator, brake does not help, far better trying to lift your foot and preempt when you need to stop or brake, its not always easy in traffic but it can be done.

Keeping at a set speed is not the be all and end all. In most cases the faster you go the more fuel you use but if you watch the way your foot moves on the loud pedal you can be cruising down the highway at 110 using less fuel than someone else in the same vehicle not looking at what they are doing driving at 95kph.

Many drive with their brain turned off because they believe they know how to drive and it only requires watching the road and the speedo but for those wanting to drive as economical as they can a little more brain work is required. But then not everyone wants to drive for economy.

many thanks for the replies, guys.

"It's also a case of watching how you use your foot."

I probably should have added that the vast majority of a tank of fuel is used driving 25 kms in melbourne to the princes freeway, then 500kms(round trip) of driving with the cruise set @110 (coz my speedo is out 10kmh)and it sits on around 2200 revs. then another 25kms of city driving. The low fuel light comes on after doing 525kms from a full tank (80litre)and just as the fuel needle gets 1/2way into the red, so i go to the servo straight away and it only takes 63 litres.

As I said, I baby it coz the cost of fuel, and my attempts to get better consumption.
Navara fuel cost per 100klms = $22.20 @ $1.48 per litre (15l per 100kms)
FG Falcon cab chassis 100klms =$17.81 @ $1.36 per litre (13.1l per 100kms)

so now i spend another $22 a week on fuel, where I was hoping to *save* $20 a week!!.

I think 15 liters per 100k is wildly excessive, it's nearly 50% higher than what was advertised. I'd be happy with 12, as it's not as aero as a falcon ute, but I thought diesels were supposed to be more economcal than this. A 6cyl falcon has much better economy. And to think i'm stuck with it for another 3 years...

Again, thanks for the input....
Have a good one...

nope, no snorkel. someone suggested that a snorkel may help the economy due to it being cold air, but somehow i doubt it would be able to save 3 l of diesel per 100k. And then there's the cost of the snorkel....

Cruise will not always be your friend. On a trip from the big smoke east along the Princess which doesn't become 110 until after Labertouche I can usually better CC by upwards of 2lph over 150 odd ks.

CC while obviously not preemptive and can not predict rises and dips is also not the best way to run for economy on the flat because it maintains a speed it doesn't try to maintain that speed by economy where as driving the thing you can do both.

I can drive along the Pakenham bypass which has never been more than a 100 zone and is relatively flat and I can be sitting at 97kph, revs between 2000 and 2100 and pulling mid to low 9's, put George on and he goes over 10 because of his fluctuations compared to mine. Travel out past Warragul in 110 zones and I can still keep economy in the 9's through the dips and rises of Darnum, Moe etc but George being unable to see hills keeps it in the high 10s.

George might be allow the driver to be lazy but he's quite costly.

A lot of the people here and on the patrol forum that complain of poor economy seem to have autos. I know with the manual when you take your foot off the accelerator it cuts the fuel but i don't know if that happens with autos. Could be one of the reasons. You've only done 5 000 km so far and some say economy improves after a doing more.
