I'm just swapping over alternator and wondering if I should replace the fan belt while I'm at it (would rather not) engine has 165k on it.
Cheers,
Paul.
If it was my ute, Yes. Fan belts are cheaper than cylinder heads.
But if you're on a tight budget you can re-use. Inspect it for little cracks along the ribs. Is it still nice and soft & flexible or old, hard & cracked...?
I would probably change the belt, but for a different reason.
We were driving back from a trip away with the van one summer and had the aircon going ... the serpentine belt peeled one rib off one side and whipped through the air conditioning hose before I even knew there was something wrong.
I managed to get a second-hand replacement which was in good condition (money was a little tight at the time) but it's a lesson - the cost of repairs (including a regas of the air con system) was substantially higher than the cost of a belt.
Thanks, everyone. I got a new belt but it was getting too late to fit. I will be doing it tomorrow. Apparently, they should be changed every 100k, mine looks original (167k) - and still looks good, so I have had a good run out of it.
Cheers,
Paul.
