I'm putting together a D40 Survival Guide, a list of procedures that can be followed should some component not work.

For example, I already have documented how to manually reset the ECU and how to put it into learning mode.

There's a thread on how to manually engage 4WD should the electrics fail, that'll be put in.

It doesn't have to be electrical related, it could be how to flush the brake fluid when you're on your own or something like that.

Anyone have any other useful guides on how to get around failures that can be included?

How to engage 4x4 with ABS light on dash.

Switch of ignition
Remove ABS fuse from LHS fuse panel underneath bonnet
switch ignition on
select 4x4 hi (Low is not possible)
start engine

Wait the 4x4 emblem come up on dash before driving.

Known Squeaks and rattles:

Bonnet latch- squeaks when incorrect adjustment of latch.

Correction- wrap latch on the bonnet with tape (easy fix)

Lower Strut bushes failure causes squeaks - Usually this fault is only when incorrect fitment of lower strut bolt is installed, Mainly after lift kit has been installed

Correction- When installing strut, DO NOT tighten lower strut bush until full weight of the car is being supported by the strut, Tighten bolt till "FT"

Top strut bush causes squeak- Due to non-heavy duty rubber bushing around spring top hat, failing

Correction- Replace with heavy duty bush kit.

Here is a test you can do to check the operation of the fan (plus other functions).

Auto Active Test
DESCRIPTION
In auto active test mode, operation inspection can be performed when IPDM E/R sends a drive signal to
the following systems:
– Rear window defogger
– Front wiper
– Tail lamps, front fog lamps, parking lamps and license plate lamps
– Headlamps (HI, LO)
– A/C compressor (magnetic clutch)
– Cooling fan
– Oil pressure warning lamp
OPERATION PROCEDURE
1. Close hood and front door passenger side, and then lift wiper arms away from windshield (to prevent
glass damage by wiper operation).
NOTE:
When auto active test is performed with hood opened, sprinkle water on windshield beforehand.
2. Turn ignition switch OFF.
3. Turn ignition switch ON and, within 20 seconds, press driver's door switch 10 times (close other doors).
Then turn ignition switch OFF.
4. Turn ignition switch ON within 10 seconds after ignition switch OFF.
5. When auto active test mode is actuated, oil pressure warning lamp starts blinking.
6. After a series of operations is repeated three times, auto active test is completed.
NOTE:
When auto active test mode has to be cancelled halfway, turn ignition switch OFF.

During this test the cooling fan should run for 5 seconds on Low and then 5 seconds on High on each cycle of which there is 3.

Hope this makes sense and can help.

Maybe this should be a stickey so its easy to find and add too hopefully we can keep it as a useful thread with no nonsense,
