Welcome to the forum!

Diesels are very simple. All they really need is fuel and air, crank the engine over and away they go.

I'd check the fuel filter/pump and make sure all of those hoses were intact. It's possible that it dropped a fuel hose and the smoke was the fuel igniting in the engine bay - be careful to check it's not a fuel leak first.

I'd start there and see how you go.

thanks for a quick response, i have checked fuel system found no leaks, not sure what colour smoke as wife was driving, when i got to the car i could smell something was burnt on the drivers side but cant find it.

the starter motor is on the right hand side, have a look for any problems around it.

When you say you could smell something burnt, do you mean electrical burnt or bunny-caught-in-exhaust-manifold burnt?

It will be a surprise if it IS the starter, not because I don't suspect it - because it is possible - but because the starter motor should not have been operating while the vehicle was moving.

It's possibly the fuel pump that's burnt itself out. If that's producing a dead short (or close to it) it will draw a huge current, drop the battery voltage and cause the starter to run slow - but the pump will get bloody hot while doing it. Crank it over and if the fuel pump is hot after 20 seconds of cranking, shut her down and pray you can get one through Nizzbits.

Water in the Fuel??? It happened to me. I filled up at a station that just had a load of diesel delivered. Turns out I sucked up a whole lot of water at the bowser and cost me thousands to fix. New injectors, pump. etc. I would say look at the fuel in the tank and see if there is any water in it.
