Can you see whats wrong with my engine? Pics and video included

Hey everyone! Just purchased a 2009 Spanish built D40 Navara. I probably should have checked it better before I bought it at auction but alas, here we are. I took it to a mechanic who did the following:

Serpuntine Belt
Alternator Belt
O/S/F CV Shaft
NSF new tyre 265/65/17
OSF inner door handle
OSF park light globe
OSF head light globe
Wiper Blades
Steering wheel adjustment

I drove it around, seemed fine, got my 12 month rego on it. The annoying thing is the keys don't lock the door. I can use the passenger side to unlock, and the lock in the car to do it, but keys don't do it, even with a changed battery. Not the end of the world, but annoying.

I took it to another mechanic (for the key issue), they looked under the hood and told me that they think the car has been in an accident, and its been repaired (badly) and it will cost a few thousand to repair everything. No details on what is actually wrong and what parts would need to be fixed. They showed me a leak (which now i can't seem to find). One thing i have noticed is that its missing that engine cover that every other navara has. Other than that, I have no idea what I am looking at. I took some video and pictures. You can hear the engine in the video, but my neighbour is also cleaning their driveway so you may hear there water pressure hose thing as well. I can take another video if there is something you need to hear.

Also, one other minor thing. I'm missing that hinge thing that stops the drivers side door opening all the way. Any idea what its called and where i can get one? Picture attached.

Looks to me like a crease in the front panel, missing bolts on hot side of turbo pipe mount and a blowby leak and check your radiator caps on on the right way hard to tell from picture the radiator should have the blank cap and expansion tank should have spring loaded one

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to have to google all the things you said. Whats a blowby leak?

i would get it checked over by a sparky. it looks like its had a rat in there and someones patched up the wires. i see one bare wire sticking out.

Definitely a crease, given steering adjustment, might of been front ended.

I think there’s a web site you put in the rego and the vehicles history is displayed

I’m in Sydney, South west. I did run a report and no history of it having an accident.

No that’s fine we all have at some stage I don’t think your on your own. Look at the positive you’ll have a Ute you know and I’m sure will enjoy.

Besides the things people have mentioned above, anything that’s major red flags that I need to worry about that’ll cause me to breakdown somewhere in the wilderness?

I've noticed about 57 different things that are wrong, some of which could cause a fatality.

None of those are on your car, though.

You need to fix the following things (note: I have the exact same model as you):

- Fuse box cover near the ABS (vehicle left hand side) has deteriorated. I used UV resin and rebuilt mine but it's gone further so I'm going to do mine again.

- Wiper washer bottle has no lid. Get it a lid.

- Agree with the idea of a rat in there. Some of those wires look like they've had a home repair job done on them. It might be fine and just need some tidying up. If the rat is near your place, LED lights under bonnet are effective (rats don't like light). Won't need many and they won't kill your battery. Ask the electrician about it.

- Door is missing an item called a "check link".

The oil leak could very easily be blow-by oil in the air path anywhere between the turbocharger and the intake manifold. The air path: air moves from the air filter into the turbo up into the baffle forward then down into the intercooler at the front, then a soft pipe onto the end of the intake manifold. Leaks here mean you're losing boost which means not as much power and more fuel consumed.

Parts (like the check link and the plastic engine cover and even the fuse box cover) can be obtained from a wrecker. I use Central Coast Wreckers, 02 4352 2443, located at 14 Lucca Rd Wyong. Call them, they're good guys to deal with.

That's not a bad list and certainly more reasonable.

How's it drive now? It should be smoother and a little more responsive.

I pick it up tomorrow and I’ll have a drive then. My main concern was safety so I’m hoping now it’ll be safe for longer drives. I’m so keen to go camping with it this summer!

They do make a good vehicle for camping, either with a caravan/camper trailer or just with tents. Even with two fridges in the back we have room for the tent and sleeping bags and air mattresses etc.

I would suggest that you don't rely on the starter battery for lighting (or phone charging) power. If you're a member at Supercheap Auto you can buy a battery box for $60 that will hold a 100Ah deep cycle battery and you won't have a problem starting the car when it's time to leave.

Quick update. Another $1000 spent but everything has been fixed. Runs a lot smoother now. Thank you everyone that gave me advice.

I happened to be up in the central coast today and I went and checked out the central coast wreckers. They were closed unfortunately.
