I have a 2007 Navara that has recently burnt out two starter motors (the current one lasted two weeks!). I have been told that it may be a faulty ignition that jams and keeps crancking the starter motor thus burning it out. The vehicle has done only 83,000 Kms. I am just about to have the third starter motor put in but rather reluctant because of past history. Anyone else had this problem?

Welcome to the forums Douglas, can't say I've heard of such problems on this forum but I'd be getting it checked out by a sparky before putting a third one in.

Welcome to the forum.

The starter motor is just an electric motor, so it can suffer the way any electric motor can - excessive loads are about the only thing that burns them out.

To that end, these are the questions I'd be asking:

* Is the starter motor being installed the correct model for your vehicle's engine? Diesels are a high(er) compression engine than petrol.

* How's the compression in the engine? If it's way too high, the starter may struggle to get it going, thus overloading it

* Is the vehicle being started in gear with the clutch depressed? This may be the cause, if the clutch is dragging.

Im with Tony on this one
What truck is it firstly D40?
Petrol or Diesel?
Starter motors only cook windings under extreme duress not normal use.
The starter is just an electric motor thats geared and brought in by basically a big relay.
Starter motors that dont switch off usually make a hell of a racket and is easy to hear even over a v8 with open headers.
I think Tony might have hit it on the head with the clutch dragging .
You could try putting the truck in gear ( engine not running) with the clutch in and see how hard it is to push it .If its harder to push when in gear rather than in neutral then it could be the clutch is dragging

Thanks for your feedback. The navara is a 3L turbo diesel. I think there are other issues with this truck. A few days before I had the first starter motor replaced the engine suddenly started to idle at 2500 revs! and yes, the noise was extreme when I started it with the replacement starter and I travelled about 10 kms and travelling at 90kms before the motor suddenly cut out. Auto electric guy told me the earth is on the starter motor and when it cooked it probably effected the earthing??? I always start in neutral with the clutch not engaged but will try the test suggested by Aussie Frontier. Thanks all you guys for your help. I didn't expect such quick replies. I will keep you all posted.

I have had a new ignition lock fitted. The old one jams intermittently when cranking and does not always spring back after the motor has started. Sometimes it actually jams completely. The keys of this model Navara are cheaply made with a very thin shaft profile.
The key shows signs of wear and could well be a contributing factor. Starter motors burn out very quickly as a result of this fault. This as I have said before makes this vehicle extremely unsafe as when the starter motor begins to fail all power is lost at speed and braking and steering is compromised. Be warned!
