I understand that the dump pipe on the 3lt D22 is quite restrictive and I have purchased a new one. I was just wondering if a 3ltr diesel revving to 4,500 revs could ever flow enough exhaust to really need a 2.5 or 3" exhaust. Does anyone think that a straight through 2" exhaust with an upgraded dump pipe would be ample for a fairly low revving 3 litre engine?

the standard main muffler is the biggest restriction. have a look at the entry to it and you will see why.
its not about flow for the engine but rather what size produces the less back pressure for the turbo, in which case bigger is better.

This my first Turbo engine so it looks like I will have to do a bit of research into Turbo tuning.

3" is the way to go. Less restriction = more flow. IMHO you can never have to big of an exhaust on a turbo car

Looks like its a 3" exhaust. The dump pipe I got is 2.5 and I have just had my water to air intercooler kit delivered from the States, so when I get some spare time I am going to book a dyno session to see what I have got at the back wheels now, and Ill have another dyno sessiion after I have fitted all my new goodies.

3" would make a fraction more power than a 2.5", but 2.5" is easier to fit and a bit cheaper.

only other bit is the dump pipe is a little tight when undoing the threads and a 3" over s 2.5 would be that little bit more tight - still very DIY though. Have fun with the mods
