well ive had my d40 for 10 days now, i had it at the caryards mechanic for the statutory warranty. the car has a vibe in it at 80 kmh and over. i crawled underneath and felt a little bit of play in 1 uni in the front tailshaft and although not bad i thought that might be it, well the mechanic said that there was not enough wear to warrant replacement and that they turned the tailshaft around and it is now a little better but its something else and not a warranty covered issue. i drove it home and yeah it was a little better but still not good enough. i have since removed the front tailshaft and wala,no vibes!!
i took the tailshaft to rgm maintenance at rocklea (no affiliation) and the fella said they will chuck it on the lathe and test it in a straight line, but the problem could be the 2 inch lift throwing things out.
has anybody had any front tailshaft worries or problems with a 2 inch lift?

spanish,manual,diesel.

Front propshaft should not be getting driven when the vehicle is in 2wd, so I'm at a loss as to how removing it could change anything.

if they don't have free wheeling hubs, what disconnects on the d40 front end, i thought all the coupling happened in the transfer case, resulting in the diff and prop shaft turning all the time?

The front propshaft is being dragged - not driven. No load. That's why I don't understand the vibration issue.

It would probably require a fair bit of change to the front suspension. I've not heard of it being done - the wheel studs on the D40 are a little close so you might need to replace the rims too.

the d40 is on it's own with it's PCD, every other 6 stud brand, model etc, including the d22 share the same PCD, only the offsets differing

i picked up the tailshaft today. $104 bux. apparently it was slightly bent, it has been straightened and rebalanced. the unis were fine so tomorrow ill try putting it in and go for a drive. if it still wobbles then ill replace the unis.
at least this way its one thing at a time, the only other thing i can think of is that there is a lttle bit of play in the bearing where the shaft comes out of the gearbox to the front tailshaft. so thats the progress so far, and then the plan for the future if needed, lol.

Tail shaft back in,no difference. I have sent an email to the car yard asking for their help, because I have also spent $140 bux on the taillights with an auto electrician, and was told by the auto elec that I also need a new headlight because its broken inside. I thought it may have been just a bulb, the car also came with no jack. I'm failing to see how it passed a roadworthy at this stage.

update again, contacted the car yard, they ordered a new headlight for me immediately , and im taking the car in on tuesday for a different mechanic to look at it and come for a drive with myself and the car salesman. hopefully this turns into a positive experience not a name and shame.

another update, before xmas the new mechanic took the car for a drive with me as the passenger. after the drive he said that there is definatly a vibe there, they took it for a drive without me and the front tailshaft, good as gold. sent the front tailshaft to their preferred balancing place. apparently the taishaft was bent :deadhorse2: so they straightened it and rebalanced it. mechanic put it back in but around the correct way and what do you know, it was worse!! ive had the car over xmas and new years as a 2wd and it goes back in on the 6th. im sure its a dud uni or the bearing in the transfer case. ill report back when I know more, if I don't go crazy beforehand :rambo:

yet another update, we rang moorooka automotive this morning and still no luck. Apparently the cv shafts have been replaced with no improvement, now they are waiting on a new transfer case. The wife spoke to them this time and we have to ring back tomorrow, im assuming it will be a 2nd hand gbox/transfer case from a wreckers or something. When they finally get it sorted ill take the service book that i got with the car and get them to write what has been done and any warranties and the like with new parts and so on. From memory, tomorrow we will have had the car for 6 weeks and its been at the mechanics for 3 of those 6 weeks, at this stage i regret buying it!!
