(feel prertty stupid - surely all you D22 owners wouldnt kick a D40 when its stuck on a patch of damp grass)

Not sure if I'm missing something, but after picking up the new car and eager to see what it could do I though i'd try something nice and easy.

I found a grass hill about a 25-30deg incline, so in my infinate wisdom I drove the car up to the hill at about a 45deg angle in 2H to delibrately take the weight off the inside rear wheel.

So as the car edged up the hill, the inside wheel started to lose grip and thats as far as she went :rant: without the aid of 4H. I understand it aint a locker, its limited slip so am I expecting to much to see both rear axles to turn together half up a grass hill.

I tried easing up the throttle ever so slow to the point where the inside wheel slowly started to turn and let do a couple of full turns - and no help from the diff in turning the lazy axle.

Surely an LSD would give a bit more omph or am I simply looking at an open Diff (bugger).

Whats the specs say on the Nissan page?

I queried the piss poor LSD in my KingCab. Nissan told me I should have bought a Patrol if I wanted a proper 4WD, so I did...................

Must have a different diff so no locker option either. Just as well you guys aren't planning on going offroad with your overpriced hair salons!:sarcastic::sarcastic::sarcastic::sarcastic:

She was certainly good at spewing grass dirt n sh1t out the back.

No worries guess a locker on the rear is next on the list.

When I flick through the book there's a blank spot for a switch to control a locker (same on my Patrol - GUIII).

I dont think the misses would like the cost in tyres if I weld me diff shut :)

Is this only related to 2010 ST-X's and the 550?

I have a 2008 ST-X, does this mean I don't have an LSD on the rear?

BTW how do I tell if I have an LSD rear?

Like he said or just jack up the rear with it in nuetral and turn a wheel. if the other wheel spins same way its LSD if it goes other direction its open .

Or

Jack one wheel and see if you can turn it . Open center wheel will turn freely .LSD it shouldnt turn

Given I know nearly nothing about Navara's & certainly nothing about the Navara rear diff, I will say what little I do know.

Speaking 9" diffs, if you jack both rear wheels off the ground with transmission in neutral, turn one wheel by hand. The opposite wheel should turn in the same direction. If it does not turn at all, the clutch pack is buggered. If it turns in the opposite direction, it is not a LSD but an open wheeler. I thought that the principal (spinning in the same direction = LSD & opposite direction = open wheeler) applied to all diffs but others may confirm whether this applies to the Nav.

I was going to suggest a burn out. :)

P.S Opps, I see I was pipped at the post by Aussie Frontier. Ahh not to worry!

I have the open centre diff and mine is weird
jack up one wheel and spin it and its as free as and I thought I had a busted axle it was that free. I too am used to the old faithful 9" diff and even the open centre in the 9" gives restriction when you try to spin it.
If however i hit the clutch hard on loose surfaces i will get both wheels spinning like an LSD.
I have a LSD centre to bolt in but havent got up the nerve to attempt it yet as dont have a dial gauge yet and setting up back lash is an exact science , get it wrong and you trash your gears .
 
AF, gawd I'll be in strife, pretty much OT but...

I have a 9" in a Volvo (V8) but the Volvo axle tubes were welded into the centre housing so I run the same brakes & no mods required for suspension. Had new clutch pack fitted & side gears to accept original Volvo axles. Only other thing was a new tailshaft (9" to Turbo 350).

I just took all the bits to a diff specialist. I do not have the skills to blue dye the gears etc etc, not to mention the cutting & welding.

There are certainly quite a few things to consider although I don't think you will have any more worries about the diff handling the power :wink:

signed up to the forums for a bit of research, currently choosing between a 2011 stx and a glxr triton, will probably come down to price at the moment, i prefer the d40 overall but i don't think it's 7-8k better but we'll see what happens
coming across this thread i was quite shocked to discover you are completely correct!
until i remembered that the new stx gets a traction control system, going through my brochure i found the two stx models get what nissan calls 'Vehicle dynamic control with active brake limited slip differential'
havn't seen a proper explanation of it but i believe it is an electronically controlled system that automatically sends power to the wheel with the least amount of traction, which is how most modern tc systems work
glad i found that as i was about sold on the triton on that alone!
i'll let you all know what i end up with
 
All clear as mud now. The 550 must get the same setup as the Frontiers .They have an open centre diff but use rear brakes to play as LSD. If it senses one wheel spinning it will lightly apply the brake on that side to stransfer power to the other wheel.
Does the 550 get rear Disks though, I dont think so . it will be interresting to see how well it works as the boys in the US have varying opinions on what is essentially an electronic LSD

This is how landrover have been doing it for some time, the ABS brakes supply breaking to the free spinning wheel and re-direct power to the wheels that have traction. It's a bloody efficient traction system. Damn good in sand too.
 
Aussie frontier, dont worry about the dial gauge you can quite easily do it without. Just go buy feel. Make sure you feel the backlash with the original diff in then simulate it with the new diff. Just make sure ur checking the backlash with the cradle bolts done up. Thats how I did mine and havent had an issue
