Sounds like you have avoided some decent work if the bores and pistons look the goods mate. Even if the valves look decent and the seal they are creating looks the goods, could definitely point to the timing being out. Who changed the chain and the guides? might have been a cheap set done at...

I've had some decent luck with them in the past. For the price of getting my old one reconditioned I opted for an ebay radiator and it served me well for the rest of the time I had the car. If I had to update mine, I'd more than likely opt to buy an ebay one as well.

So now I have to worry about a Timing Chain letting go or an Alternator Pulley crumbling itself to pieces. lovely.

For the price of a pedal, I'd try that as a first stop.. You don't have a drive selector installed do you? the little computer chips that alter throttle response?
