Where are you reading the volts? If at the battery, try cleaning the terminals and trying again, and also reading the volts at the alternator.

One way to stretch the transfer case chain is by driving in 4x4 on bitumen roads.

It does sound electrical. Sometimes a coil can fail when warm, and then work fine once it cools down again. Given that its just stopping and not running rough, if its electrical then it must be at or before the distributor. How long since you've replaced the HT leads? Another thought...

I jsut removed the two bolts on the top of the filter case and pulled the filter out that way. Easy.

Oh, and I reckon you'll need to pull both gearboxes out to swap the bellhousings.

The problem is more the bellhousing and transfer case. The Nissan gearboxes were used on a range of models, but they changed the bellhousing to suit the engine. The KA24E shared a bellhousing with the older Z24 and the RB30 in the Patrol. The Patrol had the transfer case on the other side...
