Thanks guys. A quick update untill I get onto my computer. I pulled the motor apart today. Found the service manual :) I will upload a photo of the balance shaft later. In short it has been flogging around a bit but hasn't damaged the block only worn the shaft down a bit.

thats what i found in the sump. what has to be done to repair a ballance shaft bearing?

cylinder block area. after 3 weeks of waiting for shims and glow plugs thinking thats where the rattle was coming from replaced them today and was still the same as before. so puled the sump off and found a crumpled up peice of metal. had a feel around and the drivers side ballance shaft i think...

like Scotty said keep the legal ones Incase of a prang and swap them over. All my mates with large rims on there sedans and wagons do that if anything happens

Any idea where I can order shims from as I'm guessing genuine Nissan parts will cost a lot more than others. Yes it's a bucket and shim arrangement found that out when I got the service manual off Here lastnight. Checked valve clearances and there as big as 40 thou ><

Does anyone know if the cylinder lifters are hydraulic or manual? I have had a rattle apear in my engine and a few mechanic mates I know have come and checked it out and they Rekon a lifter has shit it's self. Just wanting to know as they said manual lifters can be replaced by them self but...
