What sort of globe base? BA15s? Whilst vehicle is in reverse with ignition on, Clip the lead from the test light to the side of the globe holder. Touch the test light probe to the centre contact of the globe holder. What happens?

If your car is bottoming out at the front end.. it might be worth checking the ride height and adjustment of the torsion bars. Do you have a bull bar, lights, winch etc on the front? or standard?

Minimum "gap" required to mount a gauge would be about 60mm. + the thickness of a whatever you made the console out of.

If you as going to install something that spreads the width of the roof, you won't want it to thick - else you will bang your head on it while 4wd ing. And if its really thin - how useful would it be? what would you put up there? minimum I guess you could get something bent up from sheet...
