I have run mine through an isolator. I just turn it on before use. learnt this trick after seeing heaps of stuffed winches and a close call with fire when a winch solenoid shorted out due to rough roads up north.
I just use a switch that sits a few cm off the battery - turn it on as needed, always turn it off when finished. I did it to prevent bozos from activating my winch while I was away from the vehicle, with the hook connected to my towbar.
I ended up just using a isolator. When I thought about I didn't want protection on it, however breaking the circuit is good for as you said tony. At least it won't die mid way through winching etc. but also means no faults can occur driving normally eg. Rubbing through from vibrations etc.
