I have recently brought a 2009 STX and its great. Over time I will do some mods to it and plan to keep the truck for a long time. A friend of mine who has the same model had his timing chain break apparently without warning and now needs to replace his engine. I was wondering if there are any warnings ie a noise I should keep an ear our for. Also, it appears that this is an inherent problem with the Navaras from what I have read. Does anyone have any experience with Nissan coughing up the dollars to fix the problem because they are aware of it? I wonder why they haven't done a recall. I guess its cost.

Welcome to the forum.

In Europe Nissan have been doing some repairs under warranty (and I hear that some of these have been done outside the warranty period - up to 5 years from new).

Things are a little different in Australia, not sure if they'd go 5 years but it's worth a try, especially if you've been servicing the vehicle with them (they see that as customer loyalty, which they do bear in mind).

I don't think the problem is as common as one might believe. It definitely is an issue, and you can circumvent the entire thing by putting in a chain from yd25.com.au if you've the time and expertise to pull down the front of the motor.

Predicting when it will let go isn't easy. One person recently changed their oil and discovered broken tensioner components in the sump. They checked, and discovered the timing chain tensioner had started to disintegrate - it had been quiet up to that time.

Others have reported that it gets more rattly, and the general advice would be to use a mechanic's stethoscope (about $25 at SuperCheap) and listen to the timing chain housing at idle.
