Taking Nissan to VCAT

Hi guys, with all the dramas with my timing chain, I've spoken to Consumer Affairs Victoria, and have been informed that if I can prove that it's common for the timing chain to fail in the 2.5 engine, under section 54 and 55 of Consumer Law Nissan would be liable to cover costs of repair.
What I need is help from people that have had this issue, could you put in a post on here your name, year and model of your Navara, and a description of what happened regarding timing chain and what you did to rectify it.
If there's enough interest, people could then use this information to get there cars fixed or compensation, and might just push Nissan into issuing a recall.... Thanks

between early 07 to mid 09 they used a different chain then went back to a jap chain, we just had ours done under good will for a 08 rx spain build

My manuals don't appear to have part numbers for the timing chains. You'd have to get that info from someone that works in a dealership and can look it up.

Mmm just a thought, I wondered if the part number was not confined to one variant of the YD25. The low failure rate in D22 form based on the same block minus a few unrelated differences deepens the puzzle.

So, from reading that, it seems that Thai built from Dec 2011 on and Spain built from Jan 2010 on use the same chain.

It seems Thai built have always used this chain ??

Spain built looks to have used other chains earlier on ??

Any idea what the difference between a EB70A and EB70B would be ? Are they just the two different chains in the engine ?

Anyone with a Thai built ute had problems with a timing chain ?

So, the suspect chain is the AW410 which was also in the R51 Pathfinder from Jan 2005 to Jan 2010. Or it's the 13028-EB300 or 13028-EB30A, I wonder how we can tell which we have in our cars?

What we should have had fitted is the 13028-EB70B, it seems. Thai builds and D22s seem to have gotten the good stuff!

It also pretty much indicates that the Spanish D40s built from Jan 2010 onwards have the better chains.

Puts mine (July 2009 manufacture) squarely in the "at risk" category. Well, I have a mechanic's stethoscope, I think I'll put it to use.

For your records:-
Mame - Peter Hearne
Vehicle - 2008 STX dual cab 175,000 K's
Problem - Timing chain slapping at start up and engine missing for first 2-3 minutes.
Fix - Replacing this week with a dual row chain kit.
Let me know how you go.
After having the wheels, egr cooling pipe and bluetooth replaced, being recalled for the wheels, towbar and bonnet latch and Nissan refusing to repair the paintwork (no paint in water channels or top of guards under bonnet) I'D LOVE A LEGAL WAY TO GET EVEN WITH THE *******S!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would also wonder if the fact that Nissan replace so many in "good will" would go to say they know of the problem.

Doing the latter is more expensive (and leaves you with a motor that has had a significant trauma = possibly more failures later) but will be far less frequent than a blanket changing of all timing chains for all D40s from 2006 to 2009.

They could justify the "repair the failures" because it's hard to be certain that YOUR car is going to fail, but now that we know the suspect part numbers, there must be a way to identify which vehicles they are in, fix those and gain a stack of creds in the motoring environment.

However, a timing chain isn't a small job. It's not just a couple of rims or whip out the faulty dipstick and replace it. For that reason alone, I'd have to agree that there'd be some reluctance to do it.
