HI all first post hope it comes across ok

have had my nav one year now and not a problem.
today when I started the Nav the air con fan and radio was not working so i assumed it was a blown fuse id check it when i got home.
i was about 100m from home when the Nav acted like it was out of fuel and at the same time a high pitched reving came from under the bonnet the engine light lit up and the motor came to a holt.

i tried to start the Nav and the motor turned very slowly like it was in gear.Checked the battery all ok.
I thought that some thing had siezed so i removed the fan belt and checked that all the pulleys spun freely all ok.
rocked the car in 3rd gear main crank turned ok

push started the Nav fired up ok drove home

proceded to remove the starter motor from Nav and pulled apart to find that the stator had half of the copper under the commutator missing

am thinking that the high pitched reving might have been the starter motor enguaging with the flywheel

could this be related to an ignition fault I have noticed that when you turn the key to start the Nav the aircon and the radio turn off could it be that on my way home the ignition tried to start the car while the engine was running?

Its possible. The starter motor could be polling out or your ignition switch could be stuffed.
Welcome to the forum.Do a search with the search button and see if this has been covered before.Cheers Scotty

Sounds to me like the barrel is stuffed.

When you hit the start circuit it should cut the radio and fan. The air con will only work when the compressor is turning.

I think your right, sounds like the dodgy ignition barrel tried to start the engine while you were driving.

PM Nizzbits if you wanna buy a brand new one or get yours rebuilt by a lock smith.

Dave.

Welcome to the forum.

A faulty ignition barrel would explain it. Wouldn't be the first time I'd seen the starter wire intercepted and replaced by a separate switch to resolve this problem, although that was 30 years ago with a 40 year old car.

I wouldn't go that far. A new ignition switch and a repaired/new starter motor are called for. Just in case, get the solenoid checked, because if the return spring in that is stuffed it might be the culprit and not the ignition barrel.

You don't indicate how old the vehicle is - maybe this is covered by warranty?
