I am converting my clutch from a DM to a SMF. I have heard that changing the oil to a higher viscosity is a good option as there is additional vibration transferred through the gearbox.

Have others done this or just continued to run the recomended oil.

Cheers

Matt

Keep using the same oil.

There is a vibration difference between SMF and DMF but it has nothing to do with the oil.

Without the dual mass flywheel, the effects of combustion/compression/power stroke can be felt - that's the new vibration.

This vibration is caused when just as the fuel ignites in one cylinder, the piston accelerates quickly causing the crankshaft to speed up a little. Compression stroke in another cylinder slows the crankshaft down again. This speed-up and slow-down ends up as a vibration. The DMF has springs inside it to dampen these rotational variations thus taking the vibration out.

hi Tony, the 03 zd30 d22 has what clutch? what's better for towing do you think ? all opinions welcome ! cheers vic

Thanks tony. I understand where the vibration comes from. I have been told that by running a slighly heavier oil it can assist with dampening the vibration. I was not conviced this would provide any substancial benefit but wanted some opinions and feedback if anyone was doing this.

Your explanations are second to none. I am sure this will benefit others.

Cheers

Never heard that one. SMF here and interestingly when I changed the G'box oil I put that Nulon G70 gear oil addative in it. Now certainly have let rollover noise from the box at idle As for vibration, seems the same to me.

I've run a SMF for over 70k km and had been getting Nissan serviced (lazy) and there was a rattling noise at idle with clutch out. Have recently changed to recommended Penrite oil and it is so much quieter I thought something was wrong. Raises the question did Nissan ever actually change the oil. Penrite is the same vis but claims to have anti shudder additive. I'll keep using it for sure. As for vibration well it is a diesel.
