can anyone advise me as to why temperature increases whilst towing. never done it before. We have replaced thermostat & put in new coolant. Towing caravan yesterday it rose to over half way. any ideas would be appreciated. We have a 2007 Nissan Navara dx40

It's stress on the motor. We tow 2.5T and drag it around all sorts of terrain. We towed the previous caravan (1.8T) up Cunninghams Gap with a broken fluid couple on the fan - we did it easily by reducing speed and gears so that the torque of the motor was amplified by the gearbox. Yes, we weren't doing 100km/h up the 13% grade, but we got there without overheating.

That's really the key. We tow now at no more than 95km/h regardless of the speed limit and when hills come we happily change down gears, even into first gear.

You might test the fluid couple on your fan. It's easy to do. Drive the car around until it's at normal operating temperature, pull over. Pop the bonnet then turn the engine off. Carefully reach in and try turning the cooling fan over - it should be stiff. If it's loose, the fluid couple needs replacing. NEVER use a newspaper to stop the fan (or attempt to) because it will promote cracking of the fan blades.

If an auto you should be towing in o/d at highway speed or a tad below. The torque coverter should be locked in, that should eliminate that roar of rev's some folk get towing in the lower gears at highway speeds. That will help with your temp's as well.
