No acceleration when pedal pushed and idles rough after re-build.

G'day all, I've got a D40 stx 2.5 and just had the engine rebuilt. Intermittently it will lose almost all acceleration on the pedal and idle rough? Idle drops from a healthy say 800 or so rpm down to a really rough 600 rpm. Normally it would right itself within a few minutes but now hasn't done so. No smoke seen but diesel smells weird or not like it normally would. Used a scan tool with nothing coming up, not getting hot at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

How quickly (how many squeezes) before the fuel primer goes firm?

Just wondering if there's an air leak leaving some air into the system.

G'day mate, I've not actually tried that as yet. when it happens again ill give it a crack.
