G'day

I'm getting my Navara D40 ST 2010 Auto on Monday :D

I have read the most of the forum threads and can see it's just like any other car - there will always be something!
I'm not to worries, as it has a warranty, and i'm a pain in the ass if things doesn't work and there is still warranty on it ;) + its a company car so what ever happens it's not going out of my pocket :D

Anyways, this will be a big change for me as i've always driven "normal" cars, last car was a Ford Focus XR5 Turbo!

I'm sure that the reverse camera is one of the first investments i'll make but cant get my head around if i should do a new head unit with camera input of get one of then that goes over the read view mirror to safe some $'s!? Any surgestions? Also, will i be able to fit the camera my self or is there to many modifications to be done? Also, the headunit, i saw the one from NZ, is that a plug N' play (cant find the post now....)?

hello and welcome Londin

The reverse camera is not that hard to run down the length of the car to the rear. Choice of where to mount the camera is wide ... but is the camera waterproof or not? thats the first mistake i made with my first camera.

Also, how high to mount your camera is important too. If you only want it to reverse, you can have it high or low.

BUT

If your wanting to use it to back up to a trailer, you may find that the higher you mount the camera the better. That way it is easier to judge the direction AND distance until you reach the trailer hitch (IMO)

oh, and you will find that the Navara is a bit slower off the mark than the XR5 Turbo your getting rid of.

Yeah Woody, i'm sure ill miss the XR5's power (dyno was showing 277hp) but i'll still have a grin on my face because i now finally can tow **** and get my bikes loaded on my OWN car instead of always hitting up my mates ute!

I think i'll contact the Dig guy and see what he can offer - seems like a good deal!
May get the plate installed to, just to get some more km's out of the tank and get a better response! Have been looking but nothing found, mods on the breaks, so they not so spongy?

Woody's right the camera is a fairly easy job, run it down the chassis rails, or run it internally along the door sills, out the vent and into the tub. Power comes of the reverse lights for the camera and for the feed onto the screen to ensure it only comes on when reverse is selected jump a wire from the light blue cable of the reverse light relay which is the one closest to the firewall in the relay box on the passenger side under the bonnet. For a live feed at all times you can hook it up to any live feed, cig lighter etc or run a wire straight to the battery.

Mounting is purely preference, as a truck driver I actually hate using the camera and rely on my mirrors for nearly all reversing including lining the towball up, mines mounted inside the canopy out of the weather and out of the way but depending on the canopy (or if you have one) as to whether that works.

I actually used my camera for the first time the other day when I had the spraying trailer on the back, the trailer is too small to see in the mirrors and through the canopy all I could see was the 6 foot whip antenna so for the first time I actually used the camera to reverse a trailer. I still feel more comfortable without a camera but I guess they do have their uses.

Oh and welcome to the forums and hello again Woody long time no see'

Krafty ... whats with the 6 foot whip ? in the view through the canopy .... ? who were u hiding from ?

The antenna we carry around incase the slaves aren't doing the spraying right. One quick whip with the antenna and they move their arses.

And I meant through the canopy from the rear vision mirror on the windscreen...sheesh tell me again who let you out of your bag :ha:
